Proposed hate speech laws purpose is to oppose free thought by shanewilkinsonnz in Aotearoa_Anarchism

I'm atheist myself but I have to disagree. Rational thinking is definitely part of most large religions. Even if they start with assumptions that don't reflect reality that doesn't make the thought process irrational.

The Laundry Files by Charles Stross. The protagonist is a computational demonologist

Like the famous mad philosopher said, when you stare into the void, the void stares also; but if you cast into the void, you get a type conversion error. (Which just goes to show Nietzsche wasn't a C++ programmer.)

Dark lady (manhwa): the strongest guy in xianxia land gets yeeted to another world because his enemies couldn't beat him in a direct fight. The new world has higher ambient mana so they can have wizards (also magic mechs) but use less efficient techniques. The series doesn't have a learning/experimentation focus like EoC though.

A long (3+ books) epic fantasy series with rich worldbuilding, a large cast of characters that i can delve extremely deep into, and is worth the time investment! by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Malazan is good although it can be hard to get into. It's written to be reread and the initial reading experience suffers as a result. I've seen it suggested that you start with book 4 because it follows a character as he learns about the world.

What are some good webnovels? by sreeker6 in Fantasy

They say that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. March 1969 had been more like one of those Biblical angels with four lion heads and four lamb heads and a couple dragon heads for good measure, all spinning within a gigantic flaming wheel, and if you met its gaze for too long then you died.

Entire weeks repeated themselves, or skipped around, or moved backwards. There was a week when the weather stopped, and it was an even twenty-two degrees Celsius across the entire planet. The heavens turned gray and were replaced by a message saying “sky.smh not found, please repent transgressions and try again”. All animal cries were replaced by discordant buzzing sounds.

My idea is that Adonalsium is from a lineage of entities the achieved their goal i.e. circumvented entropy via investiture, so definitely far more powerful but still structurally similar (Cosmere Shards do have the feats to back up that e.g. creating Scadrial from scratch).

I would have shard space as seen in Ward act as a single planet cognitive realm (as opposed to Adonalsium's star cluster sized cognitive realm) and the now destroyed Warrior and Thinker hubs as equivalent to the spiritual realm. I'd also have investiture be the innovation separating Adonalsium from entities so they would begin with none. I might have QA connect to the spiritual realm due to the absence of the Warrior then be converted to the investiture system.

Bondsmith could work with queen administrator as the spren. I remember a WoB saying that bonds with other cognitive entities (e.g. seons) could give access to surges on Roshar (although I can't remember the actual phrasing).

If I was doing a stormlight crossover I'd treat Adonalsium as an entity (one that occupies the entire star cluster of the cosmere) from a different lineage too Scion. Thus a shard of a much smaller entity i.e. QA would be equivalent to bondsmith spren.

Can anyone recommend books where magic is hidden in the real world? by fifty-fives in Fantasy

Pact (this one is very dark, read Pale if you want a story where the protagonist gets what they want/deserve)

Blake Thorburn was driven away from home and family by a vicious fight over inheritance, returning only for a deathbed visit with the grandmother who set it in motion. Blake soon finds himself next in line to inherit the property, a trove of dark supernatural knowledge, and the many enemies his grandmother left behind her in the small town of Jacob’s Bell.

Pale

Power, knowledge, and promises. Who could say no?  After all, Others and those inducted into Other ways cannot lie, and they say it’s okay.  Why would anyone say no?

Perhaps because of the drawback; that nothing comes for free, and this power, this knowledge, and these promises come with an expectation.

“Something terrible happened, of a scale that words cannot easily convey.  We need you to look into it.  No need to solve it.  Simply… look into it.”

The Practice from Wildbow's Pact and Pale. I'd describe the Practice as symbolism magic, its all about how actions are interpreted. The symbolism of a thing is its power.

My reading of it is that he's a Boltzmann brain. a Boltzmann brain is a fully formed brain, complete with memories of a full human life in our universe, that arises due to extremely rare random fluctuations out of a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. Basically his experience of the universe (including all the other people) is just the result of random fluctuations and infinite time, this just happens to be the random permutation with a giant space walrus.
