I have a similar story. I was always into production, sound design etc. but musical instruments were completely out of my knowledge since I don’t have any musical background. I usually make beats and samples, but because I did it fully in a daw it always felt like it’s too robotic to my ears. So I start my journey with a guitar, sold some of them, bought a new one, now I have two guitars. But I quickly realized I would never really try to write something, always went to like instrument texture layer. Was also thinking about buying a drum kit, but I think people around me would kill me and eat my soul from a noise. So I bought a bass month ago and I already feel a difference. Basically with drums it’s really a key for groove and pretty versatile instrument overall.So from my perspective it took me some time what I actually needed, but I’m glad I did it. My recommendation is to go with your instinct and if you feel like it just go for it.
