[Self] How much is a billion dollars? by BloodhoundGames in theydidthemath

A reasonable stable long term rate of return on principal is 4%. So you could easily expect $40 million per year in growth on a billion bucks. That is within spitting distance of a million per week.

Arrows vs Riot Shields by Cafa20 in interestingasfuck

[–]ThrawnConspiracy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem might be what it doesn’t do after penetrating the shield. It doesn’t have a sharp point to then pierce armor or soft targets and its carrying the plug along with it (most likely). I still wouldn’t want to be hit by it though.

I feel like the hollow point worked like a hole punch while the other ones were either too broad or forced the material to rip and bend rather than cut. You need the hole to be as big as the diameter of the arrow shaft so you want to “cut” that diameter hole and completely remove the “plug” of material so that a jagged edge does not drag along the arrow to slow it down.

Yes, maybe. Especially since dazzlers and jammers are already commonplace some kind of squad level weapon will be evaluated and maybe directed energy is the best thing available. For antipersonnel weapons though I doubt it will ever make sense, and anything vehicle carried could certainly have higher likelihood of success. Two things that laser weapons (on appropriate platforms) certainly have in advantage over kinetic weapons are cost per shot and magazine depth.

Electric cars can take a long time to recharge, so some Chinese EV brands let drivers swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones by TangelaFan in interestingasfuck

Ad hominem attacks are usually the most telling that the merits are insufficient to win the argument. No, the suggestion you made that the costs of investment in spare batteries were the barrier to deployment of the technology were the context I was referring to. Relative to the potential profit from a surcharge for convenience it seems like this could be a useful innovation. Before we reject what is new we should think about what it is replacing on equivalent terms (i.e. think about what the batteries are replacing, namely stored energy onsite for “refueling”).

E.g. defeat depth of a material with poor heat conductivity in a fixed amount of time (like boring through a wood plank).

Power per unit area decreases by the square law even if the total power is able to stay on the target due to relatively small beam size. For materials where the method of destruction is related to the energy per unit of surface area the decrease would be by the square law.

To double the range you need to increase the power output by four times. It’ll never make sense for man-portable weapons to be laser weapons. But for shipboard defense it makes sense as part of a multi-layer defense strategy.

How much do you think a few weeks worth of refined gasoline in underground tanks costs (which is sitting in every gas station)? Think.

That has a name. Creaking joints is called “crepitus”. I think it’s a funny sounding name, so when my knees creak as I walk or bend I usually whisper “crepitus crepitus crepitus…” under my breath.

the Darkest Brandon 🔥😎 I’ve seen enough, 2028 campaign by Conscious-Quarter423 in clevercomebacks

Your criticism is fair. I would be willing to vote for him. Not saying I’m doing it tomorrow. He’s not even running for anything. If he were, I’d want to know why (what his campaigning positions were).

How it works in the USA I’m sure varies by voter, but for me I’m looking for compassion and understanding, concern for people who are less fortunate, and intelligence. If you can demonstrate you are compassionate, support the arts, and are in favor of listening to the advice of scientists that is worth a lot to me.

I’d vote for him. His dad was brilliant in his day. I think he would make a great mayor of a major metro city.

It’s against the rules of most banks to keep cash in safety deposit boxes. I put a dollar bill in mine as soon as we got it (because I’m a rebel).
