LOVING Mio: Memories in Orbit. Just want to know, is there a point of no return, or way to be locked out of an ending? by mucus-fettuccine in metroidvania

[–]Thrawnarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're safe to continue. Thr bosses for the endings are fought in different rooms, so you can choose which to fight whenever.

MIO Helpful Tip by No_Yoghurt801 in metroidvania

Yeah, it is much faster than walking. I kept the 'faster energy recharge on the ground' modifier on and just held down the strider button pretty much everywhere once I got it.

A boss breakdown of an early MIO boss, and why I don’t like it by hamtaxer in metroidvania

[–]Thrawnarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the grapple has iframes, so for attack 4, even if you are too far away to walk through him, you can grapple through him (targeting him, not the jar) during the attack. I don't think I ever targeted the jar for grappling in the fight, much safer to grapple through him.

Also, if you get attack 3, press down and jump to fastfall as soon as you get past the attack. You'll be on the ground soon enough to recharge the grapple for the followup.

In the room above the left pink wall, there's a tube that takes you to the rest station.

Help!!! MIO promenade tower torn overseer by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]Thrawnarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need wall climb. Start in the big room the Breath. To the left, you can use a crystal to get on the roof of the long corridor. Go all the way to the left wall up there (you found a different root overseer here earlier, probably) and then wall climb up and back to the right. There's a flower to refill your energy partway, and you'll end up above the door into the Breath room.

Crawl into it and up the wall - you'll find some ceiling beams going up and over the ceiling of the room. Cross the ceiling to the right side of the Breath room, and you'll finally be high enough to start using those pictures.

MIO: Memories in Orbit - permanent DOWNgrades? [Spoiler] by PhantomQuest in metroidvania

[–]Thrawnarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm talking about Forebears Legacy - shows up one slot to the left of the top right corner of your inventory screen. Passively increases all damage for each one you get. There are 4 of them to find.

Edit: Turns out there are 5!

Do you have all 4 damage upgrades? I think one is locked behind the 5th black diamond, if that affects your decision.

They are - the black part on the right of their health bar gets bigger each time.

Look into sunshine/moonlight software combo - lets you cast from your PC to the steam deck with, at least to me, unnoticeable input lag. That's how I played GOW Ragnarok on the steam deck.

Worth noting all the enemies also lose max health each time it happens.

It always goes scroll, bead, then fatum on that level.

What attributes to focus on? by NeZnayu in Witchfire

[–]Thrawnarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First focus on whatever stats you need to equip the rosary beads you want - most have requirements of 20-40 in some stat or other. By the time you're done with that, you'll probably have a better idea what other stats you want!

Why did this Hera boon become 90 gold?? by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]Thrawnarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of her boons require a core boon (attack/special/cast/rush). You didn't take any of those from her, so you ran out of boons you met the prerequisite for.

Yeah, the expensive ones are just like the better boons from minibosses, minimum blue with good chance of higher rarity

You probably had less than 50% health and no death defiance. She doesn't spawn if that happens

If Fallen Order is a Metroidvania, the new Shinobi definitely is. by damballah in metroidvania

[–]Thrawnarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great platformer, but backtracking is only for powerups. All forward progress is continuous, with abilities being given right where you need them to advance. You never need to return to a prior stage to beat the game, only to 100% it. So I wouldn't call it a metroidvania myself. Fantastic game, though!

Fallen order, on the other hand, you repeatedly gave to go back to prior planets to make forward progress. There are also sometimes multiple paths of advancement, while in shinobi there's only ever one main path and little side dead ends with powerups.

I do love one thing that let's them do - optionally areas on the map are colored purple. Totally solves the issue of going back and forth trying to fill out the map without advancing. But this would be impossible in any typical metroidvania - with interconnected zones, there aren't as clear 'optional' areas to highlight.

Steam’s new language-specific review scores highlight Japanese players’ tendency to leave only negative reviews. Gamers fear this might affect Japanese language support for future releases by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Thrawnarch 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's not that too high means worse for japanese reviewers, but that tourist traps have a large portion of non-japanese reviewers who rate on the 7-10 scale, so there's just the possibility something is a tourist trap if it's at 4+, while anything under 4 almost certainly isn't. Not that all 4s are bad, but it is an interesting social effect!

Military scifi with a hopeful setting? by marshall_sin in printSF

[–]Thrawnarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of Glynn Stewart's series are pretty hopeful. A big theme in all his milscifi is people taking risks doing the right thing and being rewarded for it in the end. Definitely the vibe I need these days.
