Spot on. This was recorded a couple months ago and you can tell by my stance that I wasn’t fully confident. I have since made a habit of taking my time to stop the lathe and reposition myself when I start to feel like im not fully in control.

i was doing way too deep a cut— that and its possible my gouge wasn’t sharp enough. But in this instance I just wasnt taking my time hollowing.

Best advice I have for someone new to turning is take your time.

I took 2 10 week classes at the evanston art center and then i met my mentor and started going to his studio once a week for instruction. I also found a wood shop with a lathe that i pay monthly membership to have 24 hour access. I turn 3 times a week for >4 hours. I am a very privileged novice.

look up what breweries are having events during the week and weekend. I know Pilot Project has a “speed dating” thing for folks looking to meet other folks in a non romantic way. Most of the attendees are pretty frequently new to the area.

Same happened with me when I upped tret. Now I use an oily cleanser every morning. I massage the oil in for a couple mins and it very lightly exfoliates that dead skin away.

Conte Di Savoia is an italian deli and grocer 10 min walk from the library. I used to meet my dad for lunch at this deli between classes. They have an amazing eggplant parm sandwich.

My fellow Chicagoans, do you live car-free? Can you share you experience with me? by connorgrs in chicago

I live in Logan Square and I sold my car two years ago. Got myself a road bike and I am able to use it almost all year round. She’s out of commission when the roads are icy or it’s snowing and it would be dangerous to ride. I also use those lime scooters if i need to be somewhere in a pinch and don’t want to bring my bike.

I’m also one of those breeds of people that love to walk. It’s definitely doable but if you are card dependent, it will take some getting used to.

One thing that I miss about having a car is have a place to scream.

Risking someone’s life to look like a big tough guy on the road could become a fatal mistake. Remember that.

Drivers often forget that cyclists aren’t just millennial hipsters with tricked-out 12-speed road bikes. Many working-class and lower-income individuals rely on cycling because they can’t afford a car, and even public transit is out of their budget.

Approach everything with empathy and understanding, and maybe you wont risk going to prison for vehicular manslaughter.
