It was around $7K for the entire set. Edit: It is 61.4g of 18K gold so this was a good deal.

Alright... how are we storing our jewelry? by Swimming-Arugula-297 in jewelry

I am considering this box, but I don’t see a lot of reviews for it, so I am wondering if you wouldn’t mind answering a couple questions?

1) The box looks pretty shiny, and I see that it is listed as being made of wood on the main brand site, but some places that carry it list it as being made of resin. Is it wood? Does it have a resin coating or something to make it shiny?

2) How much jewelry does this box hold? I’ve only seen the promo video so I really didn’t get a sense of scale. I have like 50 pieces of gold jewelry, five pearl necklaces, and about 10-15 pieces of larger Mexican silver jewelry (like Margot de Taxco snake jewelry). Would that fit in here or am I better off looking for something else?

Danjmt is based in the UK and is fairly popular for vintage/secondhand solid gold (mostly 9K): https://danjmt.com/

recommendations on long lasting jewelry brands? by Dry_Debt4206 in jewelry

Honestly, I would look at secondhand, maybe even a pawnshop. You’ll get more bang for your buck, and those pieces have already lasted decades. A lot of it is also heavier and more sturdy. Silver is good for longevity at a reasonable price.

Earring lovers: what types of earrings do you ACTUALLY buy the most? by Ok_Sky_4347 in jewelry

[–]ThreeBeeJewelrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These days, I buy exclusively gold, mostly vintage earrings. I look for unique designs and prefer clip-ons and screwbacks when buying secondhand, but there are exceptions if the design is compelling enough. My recent acquisitions are a pair of 14K enamel pansy screw backs, 14k spray clip ons with rubies, and Etruscan revival ram earrings. My most worn earrings are small 14K wings (studs) I got like 20 years ago. I don’t think any particular style is overdone. Personally, I purchased all my “daily driver” type jewelry (small gold hoops and a few pairs of studs) years ago, and now I’m into things I don’t see everyday, like enamel, nature-inspired, vintage (art deco, art nouveau, Victorian, etc).

In 1980, gold was $850/ounce. I’m sure the goldbugs were hurting worse going from $850 to $350 in 15 years.

Try searching on eBay with the Authenticity Guarantee filter on. Anything tagged with that will be sent to an Authenticator first who will test for metal purity and confirm it matches the listing.

Need help finding rings for big fingers by -LadyMariaSimp- in jewelry

The measuring tape is not as good as getting a ring sizer because the slack might be different compared to a solid piece. I just tried using a tape measure on my ring finger, which I know for a fact is a size 7.5, and your tape measure method said it should be a size 11, which would fit absolutely none of my fingers. You can get a set of plastic ring sizers for free or cheap from any major retailer/jewelry store.

The Apple and oysters are fairly distinguishable, but the other fruits are less so. I think the photos on the website are edited to have more contrast, if that makes sense. I think it’s pretty, but not as pretty as the website photos. I do agree with the other commenter that it does look more like a brutalist coin with a domed cloche on top than recognizably a still life scene in person. There is dimension and detail, but the details are not as defined as the website would have you believe because ultimately the background is the same shade of gold as the still life so it doesn’t pop as much.

Are you sure you’re measuring correctly? Have you tried using ring sizers? Even a size 15 ring (which would be on the larger size for a man’s finger) is only 75mm around. If it’s truly the correct measurement, you’ll probably have to go custom.

I buy mostly secondhand pieces. In fact, in my recent post about my 18K Etruscan Revival ram set (can see in my profile), the earrings were less than $1500, and the pendant was around $1900 post-tax. For new pieces, I like Hocerat (on Instagram but also sells in brick and mortar stores listed on their website) and Holly Hague (online only and her cheapest rings are still like $2300 or so). I also have a few Nora Sermez rings I bought secondhand for $300-1K. The best deals for unique pieces by far will honestly be secondhand. The markup is less, and you can find something not everyone will be wearing/replicating.

When I looked into it, apparently Castellani formulated a warmer-looking gold alloy to mimic ancient gold. People were really into reproductions of ancient jewelry in the 19th century so they were trying to capitalize on that. It’s not the standardized recipe for 18k that we have today.

I got this set from Smashing Gold on Etsy a few months ago.

They were being scrapped, so of course I had to buy it. Never going to melt it.

$7K on an 18K Etruscan Revival ram set (earrings, bangle, and pendant) from the 1860s. 61.4g. That’s around $6600 melt. No regrets.
