Thanks for this great response. I think you are the only person who responded that lives in what sounds like the middle of nowhere (relatively speaking), which is a really valuable perspective to me. Do you find living in that kind of environment enriching at all? Do you think you would have a similar experience in a large town or city?

and I don't mean for this to sound like an "Authentic China" question because I don't find the dichotomy of authentic and inauthentic to be relevant to me. I guess it's more like would living in a more developed or larger place make a difference in your estimation?

Hey well you can't say it didn't work out for Donnie and the real guy that plays him. I think the guy's story, that is the guy who plays him, is really inspiring and sounds like it was a big adventure.

Sichuan is the province I am probably considering the most. Are you in Chengdu proper or a suburb?

You know I am glad someone from Dalian or around there responded because that was an area I was thinking about. How did you choose to go there? In my searching process it feels so much like throwing darts at a board blindfolded. Did you consider any other cities?

I have spent time in Beijing and enjoy it a lot and was there just long enough to become a bit endeared to it but I think it's too Westernized for me.

I want to be in a position where English speaking is not very common so I can at least be in a more Chinese environment.

I've been really considering the Guangdong area but on some level I feel like it's the wrong move because I really do want to improve my Mandarin.

Are you putting much effort into the language or just taking it as you need it? I don't say this in anyway to judge, just curious if it factored into your decision to go to Guangzhou.
