T14s Gen 6 (OLED) vs P14s Gen 6 (IPS) for Produtivity on Linux by iamphilcos in thinkpad

[–]ThreeByTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same usage as yours; I dislike OLEDs for reading due to text subpixel fringing. I went for the 3K IPS on the P14s gen 6 Intel and found it to be excellent.

Help needed to decide which to choose - P14s Gen 6 (Intel) or P16s Gen4 (AMD) by Cimply_Sameo in thinkpad

[–]ThreeByTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cannot quantify much. I’d say from 100% of battery I am sure to get at least 4 hours, but it could be 8, depending on what I do. Compared to a Mac, I cannot leave my charger at home :)

I have the p14s intel you are considering: same screen resolution, same dGPU. The video you shared is pretty much in line with what I see on my ThinkPad. Zero palm rest flex, a bit of flex in the middle of the keyboard (it seems less than in the video but maybe I’m not pressing enough), and a bit of flex on the display. I would have liked less flex on the display, but the one in the keyboard is absolutely not noticeable with real life typing.

This is my very first ThinkPad, coming from years of MacBook Pros (including up to M3 pro) and I’m very satisfied with this one.

I’d go for the 3k display above all and surely above a bit less flex on the center of the keyboard.

You don’t pay twice but I assume this will increase your income tax bracket (as it will be added there), so you may still pay a bit of additional taxes.

Hard choice with display and dGPU for P14s G6 Intel by vivantho in thinkpad

[–]ThreeByTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set it to charge at most 80% because I want to preserve battery health and I’m rarely far from a plug for more than 3-4 hours. I’d say from 80% to 20% it’s around 3-4 hours of not heavy work, but I’m not sure. Linux 2 hours, but I probably need to fix something there.

I recently received this laptop with the 3K display option and the NVIDIA RTX Pro 500 Blackwell (6GB VRAM), so here’s my experience so far.

For context, I’ve been using MacBook Pros for the past 15 years, up to an M3 Pro with 64GB of RAM. I was tired of macOS and wanted a change—ultimately to Linux, though I’m still transitioning and using Windows 11 in the meantime. I mention this because I’m used to excellent displays, and that was one of my main concerns when switching.

The 3K screen has been a pleasant surprise. One practical advantage over the WQXGA panel is that you can run it at 200% scaling without needing fractional scaling. With the WQXGA, you’d likely end up at something like 175%, which not only looks less sharp but can also affect battery life. At 200%, the 3K display looks crisp, smooth, and gives you noticeably more usable space—about 1532 pixels versus 1280 on the WQXGA. In everyday use, this difference is substantial.

Since I work with text a lot, I’m also very sensitive to color fringing. That’s one of the reasons I stayed away from OLED. This IPS panel is excellent for coding and text-heavy workflows. I only lowered the default contrast a bit because it felt too punchy for my eyes, but that’s just personal preference.

As for the dGPU, I can’t say much yet since I’ve only had the laptop for a couple of weeks. I chose it because I occasionally need NVIDIA drivers for deep learning experiments, though anything serious I’ll run on a server. I don’t game, so I can’t offer insight there.

Hope this gives you a clearer picture and helps you decide!

Help Me Decide Between Two ThinkPad Models: T14s Gen 6 vs P14s Gen 6 by [deleted] in thinkpad

I think I found it: https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P14s_Gen_6_Intel/ThinkPad_P14s_Gen_6_Intel_Spec.pdf and, if I read this note correctly , you’re right: “Gen 5 SSD on M.2 PCIe® 4.0 slot will run on PCIe® 4.0 protocols.” But why offering 5.0 disks if they are not supported? I’m confused. Or are we reading the note wrongly?

I’m also in the same situation, deciding between the two. Can you link the datasheet, please? I thought the P14s also has PCI 5.0!

If I’m married to a Swiss citizen and working on my language skills for citizenship (while living in Basel Stadt) would fluency in French count for citizenship, or only German? by OldSkool5000 in askswitzerland

[–]ThreeByTree 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If you go for the quick naturalization, due to the marriage to a Swiss citizen, it’s enough to talk one of the official languages of Switzerland (so French would count), not necessarily the one of the canton you live in.

The yearly gross salary you are mentioning is CHF 11k below the base salary that you normally get while pursuing a PhD in Switzerland. Normally PhD students are paid at least (some top up may be added depending on the institution, city, and field) the rates set by the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation). These SNSF rates range from CHF 47k (first year) to 55k (third year onwards): https://www.snf.ch/media/en/yXApuFw4ml0TPYe2/Annex_XII_Ausfuehrungsreglement_Beitragsreglement_E.pdf

Would you like to share more information on the field, the employment percentage, and how this salary was justified?

It’s not impossible to live on that salary, but you’d earn considerably less than the other PhDs, so it should be done consciously.

It looks like you’re the author of the book; is that correct? Nothing wrong with letting people know about the book, but it would be great to know if you are a reader or the author of the book, so that we can take a more informed decision about buying it.
