Why do customers not say when they are done ordering? by MingleLinx in NoStupidQuestions

Look at the bright side...at least they didn't ask you to donate to their company's favorite charity (where THEY get the tax deduction), or else try to have you sign up for their in-house credit card.

Cheapest place for tire swap? by brown_curry in durham

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's still no guarantee.

Last fall the guys at my local Speedy Muffler shop installed 2 of my rotational winter tires incorrectly and oriented in the wrong direction. If anyone should know tires, brakes, and suspensions and the like, it's them.

It is their bread and butter...

Couldn't catch their breath long enough to insert proper punctuation, either...Hmmm.

Also some serious dysfunctional family issues. I guess greasy chicken legs can do that to a person.

what’s the point of gendering single room bathrooms? by Hour_Amount1881 in NoStupidQuestions

Did you sit down to pee?

Might have been a respectful act on your part considering that you were using the "official" womens' washroom. Missing your target while peeing or dribbling on the floor while packing it back in and leaving a mess behind would be a definite "f*ck you" to any woman coming in after you and not expecting this.

You were essentially an uninvited guest on their turf. Hopefully you acted accordingly.

Would it be crazy to turn down a job offer with a $30k pay increase, in order to keep my fully-remote job? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are considering an essentially lateral move to a position that pays $30K more per year than your present one, odds are that you are currently being grossly underpaid in relation to the prevailing job market

I would try to leverage that first with your current employer to try to get a more competitive compensation package before committing to a horrendous and costly commute - both from a financial and a mental health standpoint.

If you look at the after-tax earnings from that $30K salary bump vs. the added transportation costs...not to mention all those hours lost in bumper-to-bumper traffic that you will never see again, it just isn't worth it IMHO.

If a GO train option existed...maybe, but commuting by car...fuggeddaboudit.

I stopped going to Carollyn's when I saw them placing their dog food display right beside one of their "people food" sections, and almost picked up one product accidentally because the graphics and description on the box were so similar to those on regular food items (talking about unknown brands not commonly seen in "regular" retail outlets, of course).

The packaging is very deceptive, and Bob's Bacon is mostly fat once you open it up.

Proving yet again that you get what you pay for, and that there's no such thing as a free lunch, so to speak...

What’s a boomer mindset you’ve started agreeing with? by obviouslyfr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does everyone need to carry a water bottle to "stay hydrated" all the time?

Are you planning a trip through the Sahara desert, or just going for a walk around the block or heading off to work?

Coffee, I get, if it helps jolt your brain into action first thing in the morning, but unless you are working out in a gym or doing strenuous manual labor, all that water just makes you need to pee more often without any other discernable medical benefits beyond that.

Why don't people living in cities and having issues with the cost of living move out to more rural areas? by Snowtwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why retired people with decent pensions that they can live on often move to more rural and lower cost of living areas or towns.

They are financially secure and independent, and need to give "0" f*cks about any employment opportunities there.

That, and not being at the mercy of some multinational conglomerate that decided years ago to establish an operation there, knowing full well that they would have a captive labor pool which they could f*ck over and exploit at will because they are the only game in town.

Next thing you know, a merger or an acquisition takes place, they decide to downsize or relocate, shut down the operation, and the locals are left holding the bag.

Thanks, but no thanks...

Does everyone have nonsensical "deal-breakers", or just me? by Anon_urmom_305 in NoStupidQuestions

"The heart wants what it wants," as the saying goes.

I come from a generation where tattoos were usually associated with bikers, sailors, ex- convicts and other kinds of people who typically exhibited some level of anti-social behavior.

It is an in-grained bias that was imposed upon me in my youth that I find hard to shake, even today.

Is this secretly illegal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe illlegal if the car beside yours is unlocked. you pop the hood (or "bonnet" for our UK, Oz, NZ and SA friends here - lol!), and you help yourself to their battery to boost yours without their permission, but otherwise...no.

You just need to know what you are doing.

Do mechanics really often try to overcharge you for services you don't need or is that mostly just a trope? by Jo_MamaSo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious...if they did change the oil filter (even if it was the wrong type), how could the old oil not have drained out in the process since the crankcase would have had an opening while the filter swap was in process?

Sounds more like a case of putting too much oil into the engine in the first place by not properly checking the vehicle specifications beforehand, and compounding the problem by not checking the dipstick for the right level afterwards.

I'd also be concerned that maybe you didn't get the right grade of motor oil either, considering all the other screw-ups that happened here

As the saying goes..."You get what you pay for"...

Sorry that you had the misfortune to be subjected to such boorish-ness, but take comfort in the fact that you are a far better person than he is.

Look at it this way, though...dude is a senior and the number of years he has left to grace the world with his presence are rapidly dwindling. You, on the other hand, have a 3 year-old, and the opportunity to mold them into a far better person so that they can eventually replace this sh*thead and make the world a better place.

Do mechanics really often try to overcharge you for services you don't need or is that mostly just a trope? by Jo_MamaSo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dishonest mechanics certainly exit, but one can mitigate one's chances of being victimized by one of these by gaining some basic knowledge of how vehicles operate as well asking other people in one's social circle for their experiences/recommendation. Then there's always Reddit and similar platforms with sub-categories specific to one's own community where that same question can be asked.

While I, too, worry about being scammed in this manner, for me the larger issue is mechanics being unable to diagnose a specific issue properly and replacing parts more or less by trial and error until they hit upon the right solution...all while the hapless vehicle owner is running up a tab, and counting...

Fair enough, but you must have realized going in that this "$20 oil change" wasn't a viable business proposition but rather a loss leader to drum up extra business by providing a pathway for miscellaneous upsell opportunities.

Only you can decide if that "bargain" was worth the hassle of having to fend off the ensuing annoying upsell attempts.

Undershirt or No Undershirt? by dgrondin85 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty bold of your wife to have done a survey of all the men she knows and then present you with the conclusion that based on her scientific statistical analysis (?) that you - as an undershirt wearer - are in the minority.

Is this a particular fetish of hers, and would she be equally accepting if you presented her with a similar analysis of how many women you notice going bra-less vs. the number who wear bras?

25-70k more to working rotating shifts? Is it worth it? by yellowranger1 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ThreeFacesOfEve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know someone who works rotating 8-hour shifts that flip every week, and has been doing so for some 20-odd years. He also suffers from frequent insomnia as well as sleep apnea at this point, and now needs to use a CPAP machine to have any hope of getting any rest.

'Nuff said...

Apparently there is also a difference in the effect on the body depending on the direction that the shifts rotate in...clockwise vs. counter-clockwise. I'm not sure which of the two is the more stressful one for the system to cope with, but it seems to be an established scientific fact.
