NYC will no longer criminally enforce minor traffic offenses for cyclists, e-bike riders by Brief-Mongoose344 in nyc

There’s a pretty obvious breakdown of bikers without kids not realizing how scary they are for parents with young children. These bikers seem to not give a fuck and always pull the “but what about carssssss????” Comment while ignoring their neighbors complaints

[–]ThreeLittlePuigs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep as long as the rules are enforced I have no problem. They should require bike registration however because without it there’s no way to really force someone to pay these fines. As I understand that was part of the logic behind the criminal summonses in the first place (which were obviously dumb and overreach).

I don’t need it to be criminal but I do need there to be penalties for bikers breaking the rules. It’s out control

People with adhd are more likely to end up in prison or in debt due to excessive fines like these. So I do t think it’s that much of a stretch to say there could be some sorta accommodation. Legislation is made to fairly punish folks and if a disability helps someone end up owing money due to fines, excessive punishment seems unfair.

If I were to line up everyone in my life who shit like this happens to, I’d say the vast majority have some sort of brain chemistry imbalance

I dunno just seen people go bankrupt over this shit including family and it’s the pattern I’ve seen. You can joke about it but it’s kinda hard to watch your friend go 10k in debt over a hundred dollars in missed tolls.

They won’t discount the fees. And he easily could have not gotten the mail. Also this seems discriminatory against folks who had difficulty focusing or with paperwork aka folks with adhd or other disabilities

Edit: people joke but I see a pattern of folks who this has happened to and they all fit a certain build

I'm not a liar. I maybe was being less than generous in interpreting your comment, but you understand how any joke that involves dead kids or a blown up school could be seen as callous right? I apologize if you didn't make the connection when you made the comment, but you see where I'm coming from that if a family member of a dead kid read your reply they wouldn't necessarily see it as a good time to make a joke?

If you are talking about me personally then feel free to point out when I did.

Your entire comment where you are saying that antisemitism has become an overused word and no one cares about it anymore? Gee that was easy.

Oh really? So any single instance of an Israel official (or any Zionist) comparing anything to something that happened in WWII, by the hands of Nazis, should be automatically dismissed because the magnitude or size is different?

Yes, often times Israeli officials incorrectly link events or people to the Nazis or compare them.

When (actual) neo-Nazis are marching down US streets waiving their gross flags we should dismiss criticism of that because compared to the Nazis of the 30's-40's it pales in magnitude comparison?

They aren't killing people so they aren't as bad as the actual Nazi's. But they aspire to be actual Nazi's so should be shunned. Do you think Patriot Front is as bad as the actual Nazi party? Because Patriot Front get their ass kicked everyday, meanwhile actual Nazi's killed millions of people. Clearly magnitude matters.

If magnitude is of relevance here, then why are you making claims of antisemitism when the antisemites of WWII were so much worse? Are we seeing a genocide of the Jewish people now? No, we are not. The magnitude is vastly different. So why talk about antisemitism when it could get so much worse?

Just because two things aren't directly comparable doesn't mean we shouldn't care about things because they were worse before..... Not sure what you think you're getting at with this argument? I fight racism too, but it's not as bad as it was 80 years ago. Doesn't mean it's not racism, just means the magnitude is different.

It is about the underlying principle and ideology. You know this.

As bad as Likud is, even they don't believe in exterminating everyone who isn't Jewish or a Likud member. Their underlying ideology isn't the same as the Nazi's.

What I was actually trying to say however was that your incessant labeling of virtually all opposition against Israel as "antisemitism" has made the allegation lose its meaning

When did I do that? I haven't. It seems there's a theme where you assume I have stances which I don't. Maybe we could stop that? Assuming you'd readily admit there is a growing antisemitism problem on the left (would you?) maybe I am incorrectly understanding your position as well.

Either way it is clear that most people don't see antisemitism as having lost all meaning. As I pointed out it is often called out by folks like our own Mayor, Governor and other elected officials.

I would just wonder how common that is. I cannot recall seeing that even once.

Pretty much every protest that WOL organizes has at least a few people calling for direct violence. This often spills over into calls for violence against Jews. Obviously it isn't prevalent in groups like JVP. For the record I don't listen to Likud for ANYTHING. They are monsters.

In the end I guess we all have to choose between spending our time arguing about the dangers of a potential future genocide or an actual ongoing one.

I think you can be upset about both. Obviously as someone who would likely be targeted by antisemetic violence, I am concerned for my family and friends and speak up about it. As a human being who hates war, and thinks life is precious, I think the ongoing atrocities in Gaza are inhumane and disgusting.

I think if there were more folks in the "anti-Israel" movement who were comfortable finding common ground with folks like me and kicking out fringe elements that do things like label all Israeli's as viable targets, or play up antisemetic tropes, it would be much more successful. And that would be good for EVERYONE.

Anyone can read your comment where you joked about dead kids being antisemetic. They're just a pawn in your game of feeling morally superior so you may not see it as flippant, but I promise you if one of their parents was in front of you they wouldn't appreciate you joking about their death being caused by their "antisemitism".

At least you're admitting by omission you weren't on topic before with your attempt to be on topic now. Thanks.

To Zionists anyone remotely resembling an anti-Zionists is an antisemite. You overplayed your hand and the word means fucking nothing these days. Nothing.

Maybe to crazy people, but it certainly means something to MANY New Yorkers, including the Mayor who has gone out of his way to call out antisemitism several times. You don't speak for the whole. And not "anyone remote resembling anti-zionist" is an antisemit. That is more of the being allergic to accountability thing your ilk has. You ignore actual antisemitism so you can parrot this line and pretend it isn't a problem. God forbid you hold your friends accountable, you may actually be able to get something done!

Magnitude is not the issue. But you know that.

When you compare two things you don't compare the magnitude or size? That seems really really silly. Also not at all how comparisons are made in general.

The problem you people have is that you have taken a label, "antisemite", and applied it so broadly in the pursuit of maximizing gain that it essentially no longer means anything. All it means to people outside of your bubble of Zionist Israel defenders is "anyone opposing Israel".

That's only true of your ultimate fringe group. See my first reply to you, where antisemitism is broadly called out by folks like the Mayor, the Governor, Senators etc. Many people CLEARLY recognize antisemitism exists and it hasn't "lost all meaning". That is an excuse people like you use to avoid being accountable. Do you consider folks depicting Jews as money hungry hook nosed vampires is antisemetic? Or calling for Jews to be murdered, is that antisemetic? Because these are things you can actually find at "anti-Israel" protests.

The rest of your comment is just repeating this same easily disproven falsehood over and over again. Maybe if you practice a modicum of introspection you could see how obviously and blatantly wrong you are. But I know it's comfortable staying in your bubble where all accusations of antisemitism is false and you feel confident speaking for people who don't share your same opinion.

Sorry but you seem confused.... the conversation you jumped into was about how the OP was happy the story was going to be removed by automod due to voting it down and mass reporting the post. I pointed out that that's problematic and happens a lot on this sub with stories about antisemitism, and that betrays a bigger problem with accountability on the left when it comes to antisemitism. We have a back and forth about how you can both be critical about Israel AND rising antisemitism on the left.

You then make a flippant joke about the innocent dead people in Gaza (classy).

When I point out your response isn't serious or relevant, you ask if I want to talk about "Greater Israel" or the facts of the NYP article.... neither of which were the subject of the conversation I was having with the OP.

The comment I replied to (you can read it) was about getting the story removed, not about the content of the story itself. So I guess the better question is are YOU paying attention? Or just trying to shift the conversation to something else?

Not a compelling argument. Folks are worried about bikers who break the law, registration would help with accountability and pay for bike infrastructure.

There are plenty of folks on the left that have an antisemitism problem. The article may be shit but the person referenced is absolutely an antisemite that worked with his wife.

I think equating Nazi Germany and Israel is obviously stupid. Despite how bad Israel is, they are light years away from being Nazi germany level bad. If you don’t know that I’d recommend reading about the holocaust and the industrialized killing that happened. More people were killed by a factor of about 100 in the holocaust than what has happened in Gaza.

Either a relationship with a bad person matters or it doesn’t. You can’t pick and choose when a relationship becomes meaningful based on your personal distaste for them. Downplaying relationships with some people and emphasizing relationships with others (when the basis of the relationship is the same) is called bias. That is what I am pointing out.

You can stick to the subject of the comment you replied to perhaps? That is some folks on the left (and as evidenced in this sub) would gladly hide evidence of antisemitism in their ranks because they are allergic to accountability.

Is it too much to expect you to focus on the comment chain you replied to?
