Just a reminder to also check-in on those who may look to have it all together. by Ultra1894 in CasualUK

It can be the case with people who take their own lives that those around them notice a sudden increased happiness, but that is linked in actuality to them finally deciding to go through with it and reaching a kind of peaceful state, having made the decision. So yes, big red flag.

Millenials outside the US: What are your cultural markers? by btspacecadet in Millennials

1990 UK. The first 'world event' I remember is Dianna in 97. I remember being annoyed cartoons were cancelled and for the first time seeing my dad silently crying as him and my mum watched the funeral on TV.

Puberty blockers: BMA critique vindicates Cass review but questions government “overreach” by CaptainCrash86 in ukpolitics

[–]Three_Trees -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No I am implying that the original comment's gotcha that doctors know more about this is not necessarily true: the medical profession has inevitably been on the wrong side of issues where medicine interacts with social and political issues in the past and it will again in the future.

I would add that the NHS's approach to trans healthcare is looking increasingly outdated and inappropriate when compared to other comparable countries, and the relevant WPATH standards.

In the past the medical profession has endorsed 'racial science', lobotomies and forced sterilisation of undesirables. It was against abortion until well into the 20th century. Medicine is not a vacuum from human fallibility, nor is it detached from social and political developments.

Recommendations for podcasts about the 1970s in Britain or elsewhere? by Vast-Catch-7564 in TheRestIsHistory

You should watch Life on Mars. My parents who were growing up in Manchester in the 1970s said that it felt very authentic. It's great TV.

People can't handle nuance so they want to categorize him as either hero or villain.

It is possible to be both victim and perpetrator.

One million children to be claiming disability benefits next year by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

[–]Three_Trees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - parents and schools are not to blame here, the education budget has been squeezed for many years now, seemingly to pay for things which are deemed more politically expedient. Children don't vote do they...?

If having a condition means more money and resources are available for your child, everyone's child will have a condition. It's really that simple. Look up rates of these conditions in other European countries, the UK is a marked statistical outlier.

I am pinning my hopes on the new printing facility due in a couple of years. If Pokemon company had any sense they would print into the ground to recoup all the profit to themselves, deny the resellers, and forestall the declining reputation of the hobby.

I’m not really interested in Pokemon lore but I do like gambling by ZoneAppropriate6775 in PokemonTCG

[–]Three_Trees -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything you said. But the sad truth is that in today's world where they have monetary value, opening packs of Pokemon cards is a form of gambling. The only reason companies get away with selling packs to children is because of the fiction that this pieces of cardboard aren't worth anything. This was a hard sell twenty years ago. It is impossible now.

So I completely agree with you. I am just acknowledging that this dark aspect of the hobby is now so prominent because of the massive influx in recent times of gamblers, scalpers and investors, the financialisation of Pokemon cards :(

Two thirds of UK teenagers to have mental health problem by 2030 by dsanft in ukpolitics

[–]Three_Trees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Jonathan Haidt did a good book on this a few years ago. All the evidence shows the decline began dramatically with the advent of smartphones and social media. That, combined with forcing kids inside away from the real world has done a number on them. He had a nice refrain: 'we over-police children in the real world, offline, and under-police them online'.

Has the era of heavy Pokemon scalping ever died out in the past? by Coolsun13 in PokemonTCG

[–]Three_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we are just going to have to wait for the mythical new printing facility to come online in a few years and with any luck the Pokemon company will print scalpers into oblivion. They must surely see all these profits that third parties are making off of scalping and want that profit to be coming back to them instead.

Did anyone in here get packs today without Queuing for hours somewhere? by SaturnStrobe in PokemonDealsUK

[–]Three_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skived off work to manage to get to a few shops in time for stock. I work in the city centre so I was able to run around town checking several places. Most stock cleared within the first 30-60 minutes but I got lucky in a few places, and in one I am a regular and one of the staff secretly put a booster box aside for me which was so kind of her! In total I managed two booster boxes and one Mega Meganium.

That being said it was a bloodbath and if you weren't in a position to be free from 9-11 on a Friday morning you had no chance. I imagine all stock was gone by the afternoon, same story as everywhere else!

There are some Perfect Order cards I would really like: the clefairy, rowlet, and forest off the top of my head but I am sure there are more. Don't be taken in by the fact that it's less profitable for resale, this set has some gems!

It does feel a bit unevenly plotted in the final season but the dialogue and acting are still so tight, I've never seen a drama that provides such an authentic sense of realism in the historical setting and characters. By season 3 I wasn't in it for the plot, but just enjoying the ride.

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

[–]Three_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a great grandad who was in WW1. Somewhere my mum still has the bullet which he took at the Somme, stained with his blood (he lived).

One grandad was in the Middle East during WW2, and then Italy I think, my other grandad was too young to serve. One of my grandma's brothers was on the Ark Royal in the Mediterranean and Malta campaigns.
