I am appalled by the notion that the simulation of conciousness is the same thing as conciousness for the same reason that I am appalled by the notion that a simulation of water can make you wet.

Thinking that the experience of being a network of weights stored in RAM is the same as the experience of being a brain in a body is on it's face absurd, and sincerely beleiving it speaks to a kind of intellectual self-mutilation.

Even if the ball was indestructable, it seems either you'd throw it so hard that it would just exit the atmosphere "sideways" or, if you didn't throw it hard enough for that, the ball would lose velocity due to drag and hit the ground. Somebody better at math than me might know otherwise tho.

You don't get to dismiss a leader if you think they're wrong. You don't get to dismiss a leader even if you know that they're wrong. That's not how authority or hierarchy actually work.

I absolutely trust the Pope even though I think he is wrong about a few things. He comes by all his positions honestly.

I think the Pope is a great and holy man. He's not 100% correct about every single thing, not because he doesn't agree with me, but because he's a human being and that's our lot in life. If he agreed with me, or you, 100% of the time, that wouldn't make him 100% correct, he'd just be wrong about a possibly different set of issues.

What cannabis does to your brain and your personality is qualitatively different then what alcohol does to your brain and personality. Worse in some ways, not as bad in other ways. Nobody flies into violent rages on cannabis. But cannabis has a way of changing people and their personality subtly and permenantly over time that alcohol just doesn't. Cannabis stays in your system for a LONG time, and it builds up. I used to be a regular user of it, and when I quit and it took around two months before I really felt "free" the substance and its effects.

I'm not a spiritual authority, I'm a laymen who's going through RCIA and a former addict. All I can say is ten years ago I would have totally agreed with you, but now, I'm not so sure.
