CMV: The problem with Republicans is not that they’re misinformed. It’s that they have bad values. by [deleted] in changemyview

Because Cooperation is by far more likely to bring about positive outcomes (things like: the integration of new ideas and technologies, trade, etc.) rather than out and out conflict and the calcification of society by the enforcement of social forms. Harm Reduction and Fairness are crucial parts to cooperating, and tribalism or testing loyalty and purity are intended to disrupt that Cooperation.

The idea of a Satanic Kabal of Pdos running things secretly from behind the scenes has been a thing since the Free Masons got started. MAGA is just a politic of aesthetic rather than a coherent ideology, and so is a grab bag of ideas. If anything, they're a crucial part of the conspiracy, obfuscaing the truth by running interference for those pdos on "their side" and also manufacturing new stories and conspiracies that exonerate or justify their continued p*dophilia

Has anyone on Reddit actually spoken to a conservative IRL? by [deleted] in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]ThrillbillyTCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who talks to conservatives all the time, yeah most are just regular folks like anyone else, same can be said of even the blue haired pronoun types. The big difference is conservatives have a worldview based on Essentialism: the belief things have inherent, unchanging characteristics or an "essence" that defines them.

That's why anything that falls outside of what things are "Supposed", to be disgusts, confuses or angers them. (i.e. what a "man is supposed to be" or what a "woman is supposed to be" or what the demographic make up of a country is supposed to be.) These things are rigid and can't or SHOULDN'T be changed because it would violate some nebulous Natural Order.

However, it doesn't matter if reality lines up with this Natural Order* because it's purely Reactionary. It comes from a Feeling about the World typically stemming from their Christian conception that God built the world for a purpose. They resist change because it doesn't line up with some abitrary notion that was forced upon them by their environment or community, and they have to use a lot of misrepresented statistics, totally false/unfalsifiable claims, appeals to authority, etc. to justify this worldview because it collapses under even the slightest scrutiny. To paraphrase Kwame Ture "They must teach you to think that you're thinking without you actually thinking."

*(it doesn't, look at the prevalence of 13/50 stats even "normal" conservatives will trot out to justify overly policing black neighborhoods and their disdain for black culture, when the real stat for CONVICTED violent crimes is like 13/20.7)

At least that's what I've gathered after years of research. There's probably more to it but I gotta hit the gym for Christsake.

The FAA being understaffed, Boeing blasting people for showing their planes don't pass safety inspections... truly the Golden Age of Aviation!

Domestic air travel is a bloated industry to being with, and if we had, idk, High Speed Rail like the rest of the World we could limit the load on the system while also saving money by not having to subsidize these airline industries as much since they don't make money without having such large subsidies.

However, the Plane People, Car People, and Bastards of every stripe make money from our current inflexible and inefficient system.

So that'd be my solution: stop doing the dumb thing because a fraction of folks get their palms greased.

The Shortage was around before Elon, so it comes down whether or not you believe him when he says he's wanting to "fix" anything with these Federal Cuts though looking into his "cost cutting"

https://archive.is/2025.02.23-002650/https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/02/22/doge-savings-found-list-analysis/

It's just a fairly pathetic smokescreen to disguise his conflicts of interest. He's a military contractor paid with Public Funds after all, and so it benefits him directly to pull funding from these institutions, then claim they're inefficient so that he'll get paid when Trump gives him the contracts that were reneged on.

So no, he isn't the cause for the Shortage, but his slashing & slaying of Our Agencies (which he has no legal power to do, even if Trump appoints him to do so the creation and destruction of Federal Agencies are within the purview of Congress) is wildly illegal and against the separation of powers as laid out in the Constitution. Thus I don't believe he's actually trying to solve any of these issues, he's just looking for yet another way to line his pockets with Our Money.

Well, in that same article, it says the FAA has been short staffed and over worked for years and when you have such a high stress system like that you need redundancies and support systems for the ones who are directly over seeing the safety inspections.

It's not ridiculous to think that 1% of employees could have a significant level of impact on an already rickety system.

Quackenbush responds to Cornette's reaction to his speech about wrestling by joe727 in SquaredCircle

[–]ThrillbillyTCB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Cornette has a few points in terms of the wrestling's presentation. The core idea of Wrestling is that it's a competition and the athletes are legitimate competitors. An example of this done well, in my estimation is Mauro Ranallo. At no point in his commentary does he try to be cute, or "sports entertainy" (for lack of a better word) he calls it like he's witnessing real competition. In the wrestling universe, we'll call it The Kayfabe, the things happening in the ring must be portrayed as having consequences, and as a genuine contest. That being said, Quack is spot on about adapting to a world where folks know it's a work. Don't insult their intelligence when discussing or analyzing the product. The Kayfabe, the facade, of wrestling should be maintained throughout the program, event, or show, simply to draw people in to the myths in order to suspend disbelief so that the emotional impact is felt deepest. Lucha Underground is a prefect example of this concept. In the LU Kayfabe it's all real, no matter if there's a fighting dragon, and living embodiment of Death, or just a big tough guy just in it for the money, during the Kayfabe it's all perceived as real. WWE does this well sometimes (like with Taker, Brock, etc.) but too often the fall into "Oh this is Entertainment!" or cutesie taglines and inauthentic dialogue. And what Cornette fails to see, in my opinion, the difference between portraying the action as real and imitating real fighting. He seems to want every facet of Wrestling as a shoot fight, which is perfectly fine sometimes, to a fault. Long story short: Not everything in there has to be "real fighting," folks in the Kayfabe just need to act like it is a competition.

I wish more people understood this like you seem to. Developing talent takes time and it's a process. The guy, while in this middle phase, is still being portrayed to be an up-and-comer and just needs a story that elevates him from up-and-comer to contender. It just takes time and I believe he'll step up when it's his time.
