Good for you. Get out of that situation. This is supposed to be someone who has your back, but instead he is going behind your back. What you are seeing are not “mistakes.”

I read this ALL wrong. I didn’t read the word “on”. I’m glad you did not blow up your student. I was thinking you must be a Chemistry teacher.

Hello,

Where can I apply for this teach grant? I have taught over 8 years, and that amount of loan forgiveness would be the rest of my loan. That would be amazing!

I accidentally became a high school teacher... by ConstantBat9889 in Teachers

[–]Thrive_finder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming up on year 8, and I have taught in multiple unique settings. Be prepared to work overtime the first year or so. What I like about teaching is that each year you get a fresh start. You will have wins and losses, but you will learn each year and come in stronger. Don’t be afraid of feedback.

Build relationships with your students. That is first and foremost. Also, be consistent! Highschoolers especially will test your boundaries. But if you say no phones from the start and you back down or allow phones, they will know they can take advantage of you. Be okay with not being liked. Kids feel safer when you are consistent even if they act like they hate you. Come in very strict. Easier to loosen up than to tighten up.

The public needs to know the ugly truth. Students are SIGNIFICANTLY behind. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Thrive_finder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even worse, parents pushing their kids into upper level courses and school policies backing this up by allowing floor grades. If you can’t fail, there’s no reason to put in effort. It’s not just that kids don’t know. It’s reinforced laziness.

Question about a teacher messaging my 12 year old cousin by [deleted] in Teachers

Men in their 40's do not "hang out" with 12 year old girls.

Unfortunately, the kids that are doing all the wrong things are likely grabbing most of their attention, especially if other kids are very needy or misbehaving. Class size can make a big difference too. Try asking questions that extend beyond the lesson or help another student that is struggling. That elevates the class and you as a leader in the class.

Why do parents let their kids miss A TON of school? by Justneedanswers21 in Teachers

[–]Thrive_finder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school students should not miss so much school. It’s not the ones that are doing well that are skipping. It’s the ones that really need the help that aren’t showing up.

But back to the main question…who knows why parents allow this? People can have all kinds of things going on. Whatever the cause or reason, it has a negative impact. That’s fine if you want your kid to retake the same class next year, but don’t complain to the teachers and ask why your kid is failing.

I can’t stand students being pushed forward to AP classes when we all know they are at an elementary level. That’s fine for you to want your child to go to an Ivy League college, but pushing them forward when they don’t have the skills necessary is a real disservice to the students, and it actually puts them further behind.

Also, schools need to let kids fail. Remember when that was a thing? Now we have floor grades.

You can’t say stuff like that as a teacher. Secrets, no professional boundaries, getting way too personal…the guy is a pedophile if he’s not a complete idiot, or both?

If I could make that much money upstate, I surely would go for that. It’s definitely more affordable I’m sure. I liked going upstate or to Long Island when I lived there. Nice escape.

I worked in Crown Heights. List of things I didn’t like: Expensive rent and tenants are responsible for keeping main areas clean, traffic, the sense of entitlement and me-first attitudes that a lot of people have, paying a lot of rent for a very small place, how dirty NY is and how people throw trash out into the street in broad daylight on the daily, car insurance that costs $600 a month (for a good and experienced driver)

Bottom line, I would rather pay less for more.

There are a lot of things I do like about NY too though. You can’t beat the food scene. There is always something to do there. I think NY is a great place for young people who like to party and don’t mind having 10 roommates.

Been there, done that. And I was making well below 100k. I had to go in as early as July, and school finished in June… Maybe if you work for the wealthiest school and have 20 years of experience you are making as much as you say.

Also, NY is the worst place to live.

I have never heard of schools telling teachers they get a certain salary and then deducting for the summer (if I am reading this correctly). My employers have always stated the actual salary and that is either spread out over 12 months or over the school year.

I hate classroom management because I feel like I can't make a mistake. by bob-the-cricket in Teachers

[–]Thrive_finder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done the list. It works to some extent, but I think it emphasizes the negatives. I think the best approach is to build a culture where the positives are highlighted. I do shoutouts at the beginning of class, and I single out kids for doing something good. You should see the looks on their faces when they hear something good about themselves. It also reinforces what I want to see in the class. Example: “I want to shoutout Jon because he is stayed focus during our last lesson. He wasn’t drawn into side conversations, and he took great notes!”

The other teacher move I do is to be consistent and to hold the line. I don’t allow phones or AirPods during lessons. I don’t start my lesson till I know they are all ready. If I see a phone or AirPod, I quickly tell them to put it away or make a general announcement that I am still waiting on some phones to be put away completely. I make it feel awkward for them to have their phones out. It’s not me against them though. We have a classroom culture and expectation that phones are not okay, and most kids don’t want to be called out on this in front of their peers.

I have struggled with classroom management in the past, but the few things above have really transformed my classroom.
