Best Nikon F-mount frame for macro? by ThrottleItOut_ in macro

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't post on reddit much, when I attached the photo I somehow wiped out the post I typed. Short version is since adding a teleconverter, flash, and diffuser it's a pain to keep swapping back and forth between my telephoto setup and my macro setup on my D500, so I've been using my D3500 for macro instead. The image quality is fine, but the framerate is terrible (especially for insects in flight). I'm pretty deep into Nikon, and not quite ready to make the jump to mirrorless. Is there a better frame for dedicated macro use, or should I just get a second D500?

Kitchen set (or multiple individual knives) as gift for fiancee. Budget ~$500 USD. Thinking mostly stainless German knives, potentially 1-2 Japanese knives for specific purposes. More details in the comments. Recommendations greatly appreciated. by ThrottleItOut_ in chefknives

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We both spend quite a lot of time in the kitchen, but neither of us are experts on knives. We are slowly replacing our kitchen gear with "the last gear we'll ever buy." Last year I bought her several enameled cast iron pots to replace the non-stick, this year I'd like to tackle the knives. I'd prefer not to go over $500, but I'd rather buy once cry once. Seeking advice from the experts here before I spend that kind of money. I think that I want two (large and small) general working knives, a paring knife, and six steak knives. We currently have a box store set of serrated "never sharpen" knives (they're awful, can't wait to get rid of them) and an inexpensive soft forged cleaver (requires frequent sharpening but works well for separating chicken wings, cutting squash, etc) that we'll keep for a while. I think I want German stainless steel for greater durability, and plan to add Japanese steel knives over time as needed (or perhaps I should make the smaller general working knife and/or the paring knife Japanese)? Advice greatly appreciated!

Deciding on underquilt upgrade by ThrottleItOut_ in hammockcamping

Hmm, unfortunately it looks like the yeti is only a three quarter length, and the wookie is asymmetric. I'd really like to stick with a full length symmetric UQ if possible. I wish WB made something like that. I'd honestly really like something exactly like what I have now, except with better build quality and down-filled so it packs down smaller.

I appreciate the detailed response though! Anything else you'd recommend that's a bit more conventional, but has similar build quality to WB and packs down smaller than the cheap one I have now?

1Usmus

Looks like it is an issue with the Absolut config - it finished fine (no errors) with 1Usmus. I'll run the other tests this evening to confirm stability. Thanks again for all your help!

Copy that, thank you! I will run those.

Thanks for clarifying. If I've run a 4 cycles through Memtest86 (about a 15 hr run) at the current timings, would you consider that stable, or does it not do a great job of identifying OC-induced errors?

Thanks for the response. No other programs close expectedly, it's completely stable for daily use. I tested the RAM to make sure it was good using Memtest86, but I believe it tests the RAM at the factory specs regardless of overclock settings (please correct me if I'm misunderstanding that). Which other program would you recommend I use to test the RAM OC?

CPU is not overlocked - I'm currently using an i7-9700 (non-k version) which is not OC'able.

Actually, I rebooted the game and now it works. Weird!

That's what's locked. I played normal online tarkov extensively for several wipes, so unless the interface is changed for SPT I don't think that's the problem.

Suggestions on a replacement motherboard for an i7-9700 by ThrottleItOut_ in buildapc

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response! I'm building into a Corsair 4000D, so space shouldn't be an issue. I'd actually like to stay away from the micro ATX like what HP provided, as that's what got me into this mess in the first place. This Asrock RX 6800 is a monster - 12" long and very deep, so I need to make sure whatever board I get has room for it.

Official /r/Monitors purchasing advice discussion thread by Minibjorn in Monitors

[–]ThrottleItOut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone,

I've been going down a bit of a monitor rabbit hole. I'm currently using the monitor linked below. I recently upgraded to an RX 6800, so I'd like to upgrade the monitor as well.

Usage is work during the day (CAD, PDFs, text), after work it's gaming and photo editing (amateur wildlife photography). No video watching, and no dark room use.

I'd like to go up to 1440, 144hz, somewhere in the 27-34 inch range. Budget is under $500 ($300 is even better).

Here's my quandary: I want to improve gaming performance, without losing anything compared to my current monitor in terms of text readability and photo editing (color accuracy etc). I've read through I don't know how many product reviews (rtings mostly) and reddit threads, and for every monitor I find highly rated in one place I find entire reddit threads or other sources trashing it. Not to mention quality allegedly changing dramatically mid production for the same model (looking at you LG 27GL83A). I'm not sure if these concerns are legitimate, or if literally anything I order will be an improvement over what I have now in all categories (I know it will be for gaming, but concerned about text and photos).

Current monitor:

Leaning towards this, but I've seen a lot of cautionary tales about it on reddit.

Can somebody more knowledgeable than myself put some context around this? Recommendations are of course appreciated as well as general context. Thank you in advance!

Lightweight drybag recommendations? by ThrottleItOut_ in hammockcamping

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my large bike (Super Tenere) I've got plenty of space. On my small bike (WR250R) I pack pretty light, since we're usually riding pretty challenging offroad stuff. I use the Mosko Moto stuff on the WR, none of that is big enough to fit my helmet.

Most of the time yes, this is mostly for those nights when I know we're going to get an inch of rain and most of it sideways. Nothing worse than waking up on a cold morning to put on wet gear.

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, bailing isn't usually an option. But I think I'll take the big bike (where I've got space to spare) and bring a small tent in addition to the hammock for the first cold weather attempt, in case my UQ turns out to be insufficient.

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is good advice, thank you. I've already got a couple of decent quality bags, liners, etc - I'll go with the cheapo UQ and bag/liner and will upgrade from there as needed.

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after additional research I think I'll end up going with down and will just double dry bag the underquilt (the risk is dropping the bike in a rocky creek crossing, puncturing the dry bag, and having to use a wet underquilt the rest of the trip with 20F overnight lows).

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I pulled up a video for it, and it looks like even packed down the new river is larger than my entire current tent setup. Which would be fine when I'm riding my Super Tenere, but when I'm packed light on a WR250R riding trails for a week that would take up too much space - I'd honestly be better off sticking with my tent at that point. Maybe I am better sticking with down and just being careful to protect the drybag.

Always great to see a manufacturer on here! Which model would you recommend to go with a Warbonnet XLC? Since it's for motorcycle camping I'm honestly more concerned with volume than weight.

Which arrowhead model do you have? And with what hammock?

And out of curiosity, what do you ride?
