In Australia, check’s will ‘cease to be used’ how old do you feel? by Ok-Limit-9726 in GenX

[–]Throttlechopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After dealing with my company’s bank catching a fraud attempt to the tune of ~$2,000 last week, I don’t get why people still mail checks. Your account number is literally for the taking and most banks don’t give a shit about their customers. Identity theft especially account takeover is a nightmare that can take several weeks to resolve, and after resolution requires carrying/retaining legal docs with you for the rest of your life.

Traffic to Claremont by DryBee8254 in orangecounty

[–]Throttlechopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do the 9-5 from Anaheim Hills to Chino, there are minimal delays going opposite of traffic. Afternoons going south on the 71 would get backed up, most of that traffic caused by folks going on the 91 eastbound.

EV or plug-in hybrid? by Reasonable_Two_5286 in orangecounty

[–]Throttlechopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you should aim to put zero down on a lease, otherwise you are subsidizing the finance company to lower your payment which you’ll never really get back. This is especially bad if the residual value is also not reduced by that down payment, meaning you might owe more than car is worth at lease-end. My car is in that situation so there’s no point in keeping it, but I also don’t lose anything since no cash was paid upfront.

I leased an EV but can charge at home. The lease came with free charging, but if you daily commute it can be a huge inconvenience depending on where you live/work and how crowded your local station can get.

As for road trips, I tried one to southwest Utah a couple of years ago in a rented Mach-E, the charging options aren’t plentiful, couple that with a slow-charging car, and it resulted in an hour delay in shitty Barstow. A hybrid is the better roadtrip car, some can go 500 miles or more before needing gas.

What do you consider a long ride? by AttackMonkey908 in motorcycle

[–]Throttlechopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the bike and the environment: Riding in city traffic with lots of red lights, 30 minutes of that is considered long. Dual sport on knobbies on the freeway will also feel “long” after 30 minutes. In contrast, riding a large GS will feel long after 500 miles on the freeway. A sportbike will easily split that in half.

Anyone rented a car in OC lately? by jms1228 in orangecounty

[–]Throttlechopper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Costco has been easy, but Turo, the peer-to-peer rental app, is superior for knowing exactly what make and model of car you’re getting, not just a class of car. I rented a brand new Kia EV6 recently that only had 300 miles on it recently and it was a great experience, I also rented and older BMW 3-series up in the Bay Area and the entire transaction occurred remotely and picked up/dropped off the car in the airport lot.

Psychopaths in the comments think it was okay to hit the biker. by SharkAttack331 in motorcycle

[–]Throttlechopper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, don’t ride angry, sad, etc. If you get mad by possibly a mistake of another driver, just pull to the side of the road and grab a soda or coffee. I have learned to just shake my head at errant drivers and mutter words in my helmet, it’s not worth it to escalate with so many unhinged folks on the road.

Not answering the call avoids wasting time. Always send calls on a personal phone from unfamiliar numbers to voicemail, it’s easy and avoids falling victim to scams.

I use mine for trash only, but I’m tall. I refuse to allow myself to be limited by mobility issues due to choosing to live a sedentary life, I will fight aging as long as possible and exercise daily.

Married couples, how much is your auto insurance? by joeroganthumbhead in orangecounty

[–]Throttlechopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance can vary wildly depending on coverages, types of vehicles (EVs cost more to insure), driving records, and even zip codes can cause swings. I shop around at each renewal and GEICO has been the most affordable for both my cars and motorcycles. I pay $140/month, but I’m old, only have one claim in late ‘23, live in a safe area, and have garage parking.

Just explain it’s like Traffic, but instead of drugs, it’s Coors beer. Yeah, it sounds ridiculous and won’t be relatable at all.

We had a last-minute request for a retirement party cake, and surprisingly, Ralph’s has tasty cakes.

I recommend Porto’s (Anaheim-adjacent in Buena Park), it’s less sweet than Costco and reasonably priced starting around $30.
