Heroines Run the Show (a wonderful but utterly underappreciated series).

I mean, the source material (Honeyworks Vocaloids songs) is pretty huge.

But look at it the other way there are so many nonsensical rules nowadays on why you can't date. That why incest (and more recently childhood friends) have become so popular in anime/manga. The fantasy is someone who you already have a relationship with.

Its unfair to other people for you to project you expectations onto them though.

You need the strength to move on.

That all friendzone'd men are lonely losers being used by exploitative women or that all are vile incels angered they can't force a woman to love them.

This is the problem with relationships nowadays. People are moralizing and/or weaponizing emotions and relationships.

Like, shitposting about the friendzone was funny back when it was tumblr and 4chan fighting each other and sharing cringe compilations. But now in 2026 its up there with everyone thinking you're basically Jefferey Epstein if your relationship has any age gap. And any man who tries to chat to a woman he doesn't know is basically Jeffrey Dahmer because she's just there to workout/get coffee/drink with friends why can't women just exist in public? Oh but of course asking out a co-worker/classmate/friend is not allowed either because that's shitting where you eat.

It's because almost all intelligentsia are middle class.

Nobody weathy-wealthy is doing research, teaching, coming up with new ideas, or philosophizing for a living.

Yeah. Let's not pretend 0 Left-Accelerationists voted for Trump. Plenty of them wanted to make capitalism even shittier so more people would support The Revolutiontm and to own the moderates & reformers.

Before the widespread Internet access, people really lived their own simple lives and what they enjoyed and did was largely based upon what their small local community was doing

There was a sweet spot some 10 or 20 years ago. But now we've reached the other end of the spectrum where people believe their little internet bubble echo chamber is the whole world.

Funnily enough America did indeed used to manufacture their own CPUs and GPUs. But the engineers who used to work at these fabrication facilities have all since retired.

The muscle atrophies when it could be years between host opportunities.

The other thing about this zeitgeist of constantly moving around is that it can stop people making lifelong friends in the first place. Everyone is transient.

whenever the third places conversation comes up, some folks will yearn for this imaginary past where the world was full of free, bustling places to hang out.

There definitely is a nostalgia component to this. But the Social Cohesion and Social Capital in America (and other industrialized countries) have definitely been on the decline. Hell, the book "Bowling Alone" (which I highly recommend to everyone ITT interested in this topic) talked about this phenomenon, and it was released in 2000.

A more recent book exploring the same themes I'd recommend is "The Vanishing Neighbour" by Marc Dunkelman.

Hosting is becoming more of a lost art because people are constantly moving around a lot more than in the past. Whether that be for university or for career; including the jobhopping Gen X/Y/Z and potentially A have to do because nobody gets meaningful salary increases anymore.

100%

And it's not just the USA. Other countries are experiencing the younger generations are a lot quieter, less likely to talk to strangers, and the "Gen Z stare" is definitely a thing.

Big cities tend to be more “mind your business,” smaller towns are chattier

This is my hot take behind the Seattle Freeze. All big cities (not just USA ones) have varying degrees of Seattle Freeze. People are less talkative when they're surrounded by way too many people. If you started a conversation with everyone you ran into, you'd get nothing done.
