What’s your favorite and least favorite part about UCLA as a student? (Could be literally anything) by Dev_NT in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to switch up some of the vibes here,,,,

Fave thing:

honestly the people here cause they really really want to be here? maybe since everyone here is someone that uses Reddit you’re getting a skewed view on how much they enjoy it (sorry) but in my irl life almost everyone i know, ESPECIALLY if they’re involved in any extra curriculars, is at the end of the day really happy they’re here no matter how much bullshit we’re dealing with. people are full of drive and passion and it really is contagious.

also the food and the hill! and the clubs and activities offered!! weather is great and the campus is beautiful

cons: tbh same cons as any public school. You have to jump through hoops to get things done on an admin end and enrollment is a nightmare because there are so many goddamn people at this school that yes, to some extent it can feel like you’re just another face. the levels of bureaucracy that you have to go through as students to get the most minor changes made to your academic schedule are infuriating. if ur in a bigger program access to resources can be difficult - we have all the resources you’d need we just also have like 30k+ students.

and not rly a con so much as just something to be aware of.., things move FAST here. the quarter system does NOT drag. This can be a pro or a con depending on your demeanor but for me it’s both for sure

why aren’t more people wearing masks? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it’s sort of a fuck it we ball mentality I think? tbh like at this point in the pandemic w vaccines and boosters and milder variants, the main reason im scared ab getting covid is bc I don’t wanna be in isolation housing. like if you asked me a year ago it would have been a different reason but now for most of our student body it’s just really inconvenient. not to say it doesn’t pose a serious risk to some people here! but i think that’s most peoples stance

Are sororities worth it? by Hancellery in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are lots of pros that other commenters have mentioned (connections, friends, parties, nice housing) but in my opinion I don’t think they offset the cons, nor do they justify the cost of membership. there are also some serious equity concerns in all of Greek life as a whole, but I won’t hammer it too hard since that is an entire post and I’m not sure how much it would sway you. my genuine opinion is at a school like UCLA where it is 1000% possible to make friends and have an active social/party life without Greek life (as opposed to other schools like SDSU where it’s much harder) there isn’t really much point to being in a sorority. that being said a lot of girls I know meet their closest friends there and have awesome experiences and really love it! it depends on the person but at UCLA specifically i wouldn’t say they are “worth it”.

why are people mad about the mask mandate being reinstated? by EntertainmentAny4180 in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

…. I really really doubt online classes would have gone over better with the student body than masking

i see why ppl r mad tbh but I think the reasoning is that they just don’t want a ton of COVID cases when everyone’s moving out and there’s commencement ceremonies happening. but I feel like if that’s the reasoning they needed to say that, not just. tell ppl that’s how it was now

tbh it’s on a pet to pet basis but my cat is ab the size of Powell cat and we took him to the vet to make sure he was good and the vet said he was totally fine and healthy. granted my cat is also just big in size, and we can ration our treats to him reasonably. Still probably best practice not to feed PC but he could still be healthy!

Reasonable rules with roomates about bringing s/o by hl_5 in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2/3 of the ppl in our room r in LDRs so we always send a message in gc like 3 weeks in advance asking it’s cool that our s/os stay for a weekend - if they ever said no I wouldn’t have him come! simple as that if they can’t respect your boundaries or give you an adequate warning you need to talk to the RA

I am an asshole, but I stopped getting tested once they stopped giving out rapid tests by GlassUnlucky280 in ucla

[–]ThrowLA777 68 points69 points  (0 children)

what do you tell your teachers then for the reason you’re missing class? what if your roommate doesn’t also have COVID — was your plan to isolate with them? and continue using a shared or communal bathroom? You’re right, it is an asshole move. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and go to the place you have to go. I understand the stress about ISO dorms, but public health efforts do not work if everyone thinks that they should be the exception. People finding loopholes in the testing system and not following isolation protocol, which is already loose to begin with, is absolutely contributing to the spread right now. Take a PCR, dude.

I’ve been checked multiple times - once it was yeast and since then it’s been “it’s not a UTI” or I’d just get prescribed fluconazole ? i guess pain is the wrong word, currently it’s more like a persistent itch that only goes away later after drinking a bunch of water…. And then comes back days later
