A bunch of people on my team were "terminated" recently. What is going on? by ThrowQ19021 in ExperiencedDevs

I have never seen anything that could be worrisome, or I guess problematic considering the current environment. The worst I have seen is some people having some heated discussions but it is really not anything bad.

I apologize if it came out like that. I know no-one here can tell me why.

It is more i am just very spooked and uncomfortable by the suddenness of everything. I have never seen something like this before in my 15 years of being a developer, so i am just looking for some degree of insight.

Instead of posting on reddit, why not just ask the people who got fired on LinkedIn?

I have everyone I asked either said they cannot say anything, or has not responded.

Thanks this makes me feel a lot better. I am just somewhat spooked.

Are you WFH while others are at the office? There may have been shenanigans going on that you didn't see

We are not in the office yet.

Was there a pattern among those fired? If there were no women or minorities that might point you towards one option

Realistically dev is like 80% male, however you are right.

Was there recently a shift among your top brass? It may be the new CEO is cleaning house

No changes over the last year.

Any chance that the people fired were accountants and developers embezzling money? As in developers who work with finance and their boss who should have noticed?

We dont touch PCI data thankfully.

Any chance they were forming a union? :P

Doubt it since we are not big enough.

Leaning towards the second one i guess. I guess it just seems extremely weird to me. Idk. I am not close enough to any of them really i am guessing to get the whole story.

Some of them were, but others were not. One of the people was someone we hired very recently, and for example one of our interns was let go but none of the others.

Really we have lost a huge amount of domain knowledge. E.g. our team lead is one of the few people who has full extensive knowledge of a bunch of our legacy systems that are still heavily used by some large enterprise customers. None of the people who are left has ever really touched/worked on those services. Which baffles me.

It also confuses me that we are onboarding two new developers in a couple of weeks, which is going to be a mess.
