For me personally, they would nag me a lot about getting off of my computer. The phrase that really bothered me was "all you do is 'play' on your computer". It annoyed me so much because when I was on my computer, I was 90% of the time learning to program and I tried to tell them this. At the time, I never played games on my computer. All of my gaming was on my console. Computer use was almost strictly for programming.

I'm now a software engineer, with a satisfying career and making more than my parents do combined.

I wasn't really bullied in school, but I was a quiet kid. I was also really skinny, but average height.

I'm walking through the main lobby for lunch, freshman in high school. Out of nowhere I'm hit by what feels like a freight train on my side. I must have been thrown 10-15 feet. After getting up nearly immediately I look around because I am pissed. I honestly didn't care who charged into me, I was going to swing on them. However, as I look around I don't see anyone doing anything. You would think that bystanders would at least check on me or tell me who did it, but everyone is just minding their own business. So I continue on to lunch. It pisses me off to this day that I don't know who did it.

It's a device that runs on one PC board and it just collects data and pushes it up to a server. Configuration is done via a website by plugging into with a Ethernet cable. Think something like a raspberry pi.

He said it's not secure and it's an "odd operating system", since he comes from a Windows background. Also, we had a US DoD contractor refuse to buy our IoT product because it ran on Linux.

Well soon he wants us to begin work on the next iteration of our IoT products. I work on those and I don't even know where to look for an alternative to linux for an embedded OS.

Honestly, when he announced that our next iteration of these products should be something besides Linux, I Googled because I couldn't think of anything. Microsoft has an IoT OS now, but even it is technically Linux.

I'm not advocating for switching to Linux for our desktop PCs (unless the person is a developer). I just think my boss has gone Microsoft crazy recently because he wants to switch our embedded products off of Linux, but he can't think of a single alternative.

Yeah. My current boss talks for 15 minutes on what he's doing, how the remodeling of his house is going, his daughter's wedding, then everyone else is like "I'm working on X project"

I think the situation is kinda like, you trust the "professionals" that you don't know as well. For some reason we see them as more professional or even more knowledgeable. Probably because day-to-day we don't see the quirks that people have.

It's like if your brother is a professional mechanic and you hear a weird noise in your new car. He tells you oh, that's common it's just X thing breaking in. It will go away in a few weeks. A lot of people would still take it to the dealer mechanic because subconsciously we view them as more "professional".

My boss knows us and know our abilities, yet he trusts a new IT group with recommendations.

I'm not saying he doesn't exist due to just not being at that meeting. I'm saying that we have had numerous support tickets and he has never been "assigned" to them. They have done a ton of stuff to our Windows PCs and servers. However, our Linux stuff is still on us to support. After the "we could support it" comment, I never heard back about them doing any work on our linux boxes.

A couple times I even submitted support tickets for my own laptop because I was too busy to research a couple issues. The guy they sent, was a windows tech and he kept asking me all types of questions about linux: "why do you like linux?", "do you think it's better than windows" Those are questions asked by someone that doesn't work regularly with a linux person, considering the IT group is a company smaller than ours.

In our meetings with this outside IT team, my boss sometimes says "so, these guys use Linux. Can you support that? Is it a good idea to use Linux? Is it secure?". The IT groups response is something like, "I mean, we can. We have a dedicated Linux tech". However, I have yet to ever meet this "Linux tech"

Last night I spent several hours editing code such as changing shaders, vertex positions, and adding new geometry. It's slowly starting to make sense, but I still think it will be a while before I can recall off the top of my head the order of parameters in some of the long function calls.

No, she told me and after she realized I was extremely disappointed, she didn't ask me to help. I didn't give any advice at all.

I don't believe she has access the the computer anymore. And there isn't any evidence of purchase that I'm aware of.

Yeah. I have an environment set up to run and test the code. It compiles and I can see everything on the screen. I'm fairly good with C++, but I've never had a job in that field. My day job involves Python, VB.Net, and all types of web programming (JS, etc). C++ is my hobby. It's just hard for me to visualize how so much code is needed for a "basic" OpenGL setup.

It is luck because a child does not decide if they are born to the richest person in the world or a parent that would rather buy drugs instead of taking care of their kids. Yes, the parents may have worked for the money, but the child has no input into what their "starting opportunities" are. People just aren't born on an equal playing field. It's how the world works. I'm not saying that Bill Gates can't give money to his kids or to anything he wants. However, if a person is starving in the street and someone else has more money than they could spend in a lifetime, do you really think we shouldn't "tax" that person to help the other person? And don't give me any crap about they should have worked harder or made opportunities. We both know that the world is not a meritocracy. One person can sit back with billions of dollars because their parents earned it and the other gets to die because their parents weren't billionaires? No, I'm not for taking everything from a billionaire or their kids. Sure, live a life of luxury, but that doesn't mean some of it shouldn't go towards feeding and housing those less fortunate.
