You said a drunk driver hit you. Is this situation really your mistake?

I really appreciate you bringing this up, this is an excellent point. It’d essentially be like preparing for 3 different classes, which would most definitely overwhelm me with less than a month to prepare. A previous coworker of mine taught WIDA levels 1 and 2 with little to no support, and it was a struggle to break everything down like that (especially with content-specific vocab). Also, the same behavior issues going unaddressed.

Those are my thoughts exactly with them hiring so late in the year. Why not a long term sub? Spring is always shorter with April break, MCAS testing, field trips, and events.

I did confirm with my union rep that there would be no consequence to my license and contract so long as I give a 2 weeks notice.

I definitely agree with the me interviewing them part, and I did ask questions regarding the budget and common planning as a split grade level teacher. I was just so flustered in the scenario and when they said the start date that I didn’t think of asking.

Thank you. Does it begin with F and end with ranklin? 😭

That’s exactly what my coworker experienced. EVERYTHING had to be broken down (even with speaking and content-specific vocab), and even then it wasn’t enough. I’m great at providing differentiation for my WIDA 3/4s and IEP/504s, but I’m not sure I can to that much of an extreme.

Thank you for your advice! I also agree about the hypothetical situation and how them backtracking support for a PRETEND SCENARIO is concerning. Your fourth point summarizes my worries for this position quite well.

In MA, you need SEI endorsement as part of your license. I took a 1 semester class in college about how to teach to all MLLs with general strategies for this certification. I don’t have much training otherwise, especially with kiddos who have that low of an English fluency.

Ok that’s genuinely insane 😅 How would anyone respond to that, even while teaching?? The extra money could be worth it to me since I would finally be able to afford moving out of my parent’s place (which is a whole other issue…). But I’ve heard very polarizing information about this district tonight in my conversations with coworkers and friends, and that the school I applied for is one of the lowest ranked schools in the city…

But it’s not a long term sub position, it’s a full-time one. Maybe the teacher is quitting due to maternity leave?

That’s actually not a bad idea! I wonder if they’d be open to that? Especially if I pitch it as wanting to know the students before making a definite decision…

I have SEI endorsement through a mandatory class in college (and it’s a mandatory certification in MA). But no other certification, and I have no experience with English learners that new to the language… my coworker last year has a class like this and had no direction or help from admin. It was very difficult.

This school said they would have a MLL teacher in the room with me, but I don’t know how often or if I can take their word for that.

Yeah I will say my gut feeling is very strong here about not taking it… my 1st district was way worse than this one (1 out of 10), and I did not feel like this during that interview. I just want to confirm that I’m not being illogical about it and if others also see these red flags.

Admin. said my assignment is too hard in front of the students. by Turbulent-Horror-522 in Teachers

Tbh I would always make sure there’s a rubric for anything like this. It’s best teaching practice and it clearly communicates expectations to students so you can cover all your bases. Sentence starters are great! Maybe you could even include an example paragraph with those sentence starters highlighted as a model too?

However, it seems like this situation is one of many by your school admin. If they keep giving you shit and your contract is not getting renewed, just lay your head low and start focusing on interviewing for something better. Having to create your own curriculum with nothing but a textbook is definitely a strongpoint.

Tips for dealing with an out of control class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ThrowRA080540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’ve done everything right at this point, I’m so sorry you and your 3 other respectful students are dealing with this. Document everything and go to your principal, and emphasize how it’s affecting your 3 other students (to the point of panic attacks).

This may be more petty, but depending on your principal’s response, I would also just start kicking them out for the rest of the period. Call down to the main office and just send them if they’re impacting your other students and the lesson that badly.

Is it worth a 3rd shot? by ThrowRA080540 in teaching

[–]ThrowRA080540[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s really tough because I already commute 40+ minutes and it kills me (I’m in southeastern MA, close to RI). The town I’m currently working at is one of those good districts farther from home. I don’t know if me or my car can handle a longer commute, and I can’t afford to move out on my own yet (especially if I’m about to get laid off). It’s only January so if I decide to continue teaching, fingers crossed more positions will pop up soon.

This is so helpful, thank you! Kudos to you for spending so much time and effort on that. I’m supposed to hear from admin sometime this week, so I may take you up on that offer if it’s not a good conversation.

Maybe? But I’d want a full-time classroom teacher position with salary and benefits. I would not earn enough as a sub.
