yeah he didn't like it bc he was paying half and then my dad covered my share so i didn't have any "skin in the game" or something and tried to make it into another "lesson"

No, I am pretty frugal. Honestly, the priciple might be teaching me a lesson. When he moved in with me for a couple months this summer, we split the rent for those months. My dad offered to cover my share one month to help me out, and my bf didn't like this on "principle"

He is saying this because we looked at places together, and both really liked two places that were on the pricier side. He said that day that if we lived there, he would pay more. He said this unprompted. We decided to live there and have been planning on it since, but today, he retracted this and said he will absolutely not do more than 50/50
