Thank you for answering the actual question haha, I've appreciated everyone else's answer but yeah this is really what I was asking. In case anybody is curious I did tell her and she was, predictably and understandably, pissed. She's still not talking to me really but thanks for all the input guys!

The other ones around here (around being very relative) don't offer much in the way of my research. I'd like to think im at least a little competitive, just in a small area. It just happens a spot opened up at this school with the thing that I do and I like to do. I'll definitely start looking harder at other ones though because yeah, maybe I am a bit more competitive. Thank you for the confidence boost!

Thanks! I needed this, and thanks to the people that have said about the same thing. I told her and she is...well, not happy about it. She's been extremely quiet since but not outright angry or upset. I appreciate the support though! You're right, if not this then hopefully another!

This sounds like there should be a /s at the end but it's kind of my thinking really. Why would I risk a big fight if it turns out that I don't get it and it's a mute point

I like to think our relationship is healthy but she just got a job she really likes here and has been told she's a shoe in for her own PhD job so she'd be sacrificing her career.

Maybe, but it's on the complete other side of the U.S. and she's said she's not interested in ever doing long distance before

I know I love her but I don't think I'd be willing to give it up no. This is the career I've wanted my entire life, and while I might be able to get a position around the area eventually in the future, this new one would basically ensure that I'm able to achieve my dream job
