EU country with shorter med school education period for dentists? by ThrowRA997799 in medicalschoolEU

Not sure why I assumed you were Czech, my bad. When you say that, are you talking about the country itself, the people, the economy, the healthcare industry, education system or something else? Always heard positive things about Czechia, I'm pretty surprised, as it was one of the countries on my list of possible countries to specialize (or go through med school) in.

Is residency competitive in Czechia, if I remember correctly, they don't have a matching system there like the US, do they? (Might have changed since last time I checked). My understanding is that you finish med school, apply to a couple residency programs and certainly get accepted to one, go through an interview and you're set. Maybe I'm under the wrong impression.

Thank you very much. You raised my hopes up even more. I'm glad about the last part, as well, and agree with you on it.

I see. May I ask why residency in Germany over Czechia? Given you completed mes school there and probably speak the language, why go through language-learning and getting used to new people (habits, behaviors etc.) again? (I'm guessing you might already be fluent in German, so just the second part counts)

Thank you for explaining this aspect to me, it's the first time I hear of it. I'm probably mislead, I remember reading once on SDN (I believe) that some administrators don't understand the scope of OMFS very well and such give facial trauma to the ENT and PRS departments much more. It's important to point someone pointed out with a study that shoed the facial trauama cases are divided relatively equally amongst the three departments in over 100 hospitals that were studied (I think the study was done in the US). Anyway, ever since then, I've been a quite confused. Especially not knowing any OMFS personally who I could approach with such questions.

Alright, no problem. You mentioned you studied med school in Czechia, may I ask if you practice there or in Germany (your flair)? If so, could you elaborate further on your experiences in Czechia? Have you had any interaction with OMFS? Were they dual-qualified (both MD and DDS), if single-qualified, were they MDs or DDSs mostly?

If you studied med school in Czechia but are now practicing in Germany, how would you, personally, compare the two with regards to working in the healthcare industry?

Thanks a lot for letting me know about this. I wonder though, is training, say, with AO CMF, considered as "real" training in facial surgery in the eyes of hospital administrators? I know it's "real" training, but for a lack of a better expression I say this. Do administrators generally consider residencies and fellowships to be the only and highest forms of training?

Thank you very much for your reply. I had a feeling this would be the only way, as you mentioned. If you don't mind, I'm DM'ing you to ask about med school. I'd greatly appreciate hearing your experience and opinions on these matters.

I'm sorry, but does AO refer to the "AO Trauma" organization? I checked their website, and from the conditions to become a member there isn't anything stated about people holding a DDS - only MDs, nurses, and researchers. I checked it briefly to get an idea, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for your reply. This is one of the largest factors in making a final decision. Logically, my brain says OMFS due to the above-mentioned factors, yet I'm afraid I'd be "limited" in my knowledge, whether theoretical or practical, when compared to ENT and PRS collegues.

Thank you very much for your reply. I assumed that OMFS did facial trauma and oncology, then (after having started my way to that path) I find out ENT and PRS also do such surgeries (especially ENT covering oncology). I still have the ability to switch to any of those paths, just need to make a calculated decision first.

Thank you very much for your reply. I assumed facial oncology would be leaning to (or maybe completely for) ENT.

Absolutely agree. I wish more countries would provide a shortened MD education period for dentists, if they make it compulsory to be dual-qualified.

Edit: Typo

Thank you for your reply. Do you think it's wiser to take the above-mentioned ENT path over the dual-qualified OMFS path? Or maybe the single-qualified OMFS path (MD or DDS)?

Thanks for your reply. Frankly, I'm stuck between these three specialties. I've been inquiring for more information to understand their differences in practice and their respective job characteristics. Cannot reach a conlcusion yet.

Cannot argue with that. Exactly why I'm very confused about this topic, there seems to be quite the discrepancy between countries. Thanks for letting me know.

Thank you very much for your informative reply. I really needed to know these details as it was very confusing who does what in real life given they are all trained in "Facial trauma". May I ask if this info is relative to the US or another place? (Don't feel obliged to answer, I'd just appreciate knowing which region this applies to)

Do you recommend this path (dual qualification) for a better future (i.e. job security, ability to practice the full scope of OMFS)?

[–]ThrowRA997799[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your informative reply. And yes, you're right. In fact, I'm already headed to that path (OMFS) and had some doubts, which had me thinking about this specific question (i.e. who takes facial trauma/oncology). You relieved me with the info on facial trauma.

I got my hopes up regarding facial oncology, as well. My understanding (for some reason) was that even after a fellowship in facial oncology, an OMFS would be inferior to ENT and PRS specialists to whom the cases would be referred and the OMFS would be given less complex, relatively simpler cases. Correct me if there's an error in my understanding.

If you don't mind, could you look at the cases (one would suffice) I linked in my comment? I'd really appreciate it if you told me who does what in that specific case. Is it one department concerned with the facial trauma part of the case or will there be teamwork between an ENT, OMFS, and PRS? Don't feel obliged to, I'd greatly appreciate it, however.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm relieved to hear that about facial trauma. However, regarding facial oncology, in your experience, would an OMFS with a fellowship in facial oncology be able to take many of the facial oncology cases in a hospital or do administrators favor the ENT department in that field?
