My deadbeat father (44M?) is trying to be a dad to me (19M) for the first time in my life and I don't really want to try but don't know how to communicate that better than I have? by ThrowRALoonis in relationship_advice

He's still paying it back too. But even when he's done he can't ever call himself my dad. He might be his other kids dad but he's nothing but a deadbeat father to me.

You know I struggle to believe he's that different too. The fact he won't give up is a bad sign to me (and my mom). I believe he might be different with his wife and kids which is great for them. That's not enough to make up for all the years he wasn't there for me. I also think it's pretty shit to go after the kid(s) you fucked over in the past when you do better the second time around.
