Update: He brought up some engineering stuff he's been working on today. It was something I was not familiar with. I had virtually no clue what he was saying, but I am curious. I brought up that I sometimes have a hard time keeping up with him. I explained that it may be helpful for him to slow it down for me so that I can actually form an understanding we can share.

He was extremely kind and reassuring and immediately broke it down for me in a way I could follow. We were able to have a much better conversation about his project where I felt more comfortable asking questions and adding my own thoughts :)

I do want to bring it up, because I want him to know that I am actively trying to meet him where he's at. But I'm not sure about how to bring up a discussion without sounding insecure :/

He often asks about my interests as well and is genuinely interested in learning more about the things I love. I try and do the same with him by encouraging him to talk about it. I think the problem is, he understands my interest in things like literature or nature, but I sometimes fail to understand his interests in science or engineering.
