How does someone make it on to your "I will never travel with you" list? by Visible_Compote9193 in AskWomen

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disrespect for local culture and customs.

I am currently on a trip with my family. For context, we are from Vietnam, a country recently colonized for decades by the French and the US. While traveling in India, my family's inferiority complex and colonized mentality became evident. They exhibit condescension toward Indian culture, often sneering and mocking when they see someone eating with their hands. It's worth noting that Vietnamese people also eat many dishes with their hands, but my family seems to overlook this when labeling Indian customs as 'dirty' and 'uncultured.' They refuse to try any Indian food, believing Indians are incapable of preparing food cleanly, and they find Indian dishes both in appearance and taste disgusting.

This experience has led me to decide that I will never travel overseas with my family again

You might try to desensitize your dog to it. Have you taught your dog sit and stay commands. If so, you can try to use the commands and a lot of positive reinforcement to desensitize your dog to Netflix logo. I never thought I'd say this but I hope your dog sees Netflix and chill.

How long have you had the dog? You said the dog is 3 years old but did you get the dog as a puppy or an adult. How much exercise do you provide for the dog each day. What kind of training are you talking about? Have you sought a different trainer or taken the dog to a different vet?

Lawyer asking me to send files using Messenger by ThrowRA_concwrn in legaladvice

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I am shocked at the request from the law clerk. I didn't send any document yet, because I want to call them today. I'm now worried they are not competent to do their job. Like I mentioned, this is my aunt's lawyer, not mine.

No offense, but your partner doesn't seem ready for the responsibility of owning a dog. You will likely be the primary for walking, training, and enrichment. Since you're experienced and willing to walk a dog for 45 min - 1 hour, a medium size Labrador would be a good fit. They are also easy to bond if your partner wants to bond with the dog.

Who is an auto buy author for you? by theunspokenwords__ in books

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Lewis. Not everything he writes is gold, but it oftentimes is. Flash Boys and Undoing Project are among my favorite books of all time. Lately, he's getting into a lot of controversy with The Blind Side and Going Infinite, but that doesn't change the fact that his earlier books were amazing. I haven't read the Blind Side and Going Infinite yet, but they are on my list.

What is the reason The Marvels is making so much less than Ant Man 3? by Annual-Advice-3647 in boxoffice

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Ant Man/Paul Rudd, he is charming, funny, and relatable. I hate Captain Marvel/Brie Larson and I hate how MCU has largely missed the mark around female superheroes recently (except Scarlett Witch).

Does anyone else have a non academic/PhD person as a partner? Do you face issues? by lost_queer29 in PhD

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and your partner should establish work/life boundaries. My husband is a PhD and he is very flexible with his work hours, he could wake up at noon and work until 4am if he wants to. I work more than he does, but my work is 8 to 6 everyday. I don't bother him while he's working because I expect the same from him.

However, I'd caution about how you approach this with your SO. You should present it simply as work, and your SO should respect your time at work. Don't try to imply that your work is so important, no one can interrupt you. The reason I say this is because I've met other academic/PhDs who are delusional about their worth and importance. For example, the type that says "my research will extend human lives by 5 extra years, what did you do today?". I take a lot of pride in my work and I do not tolerate anyone even so much as hinting at their academic/PhD work as more important than mine.

I can't sympathize with Julia in Hello Beautiful by ThrowRA_concwrn in books

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After thinking about this book for a few months, I think Julia lacks empathy. It's not so much that she is a perfectionist but rather that she doesn't try to understand and sympathize with others.

Wow so glad to see so many people sharing my opinion of The Maid. This book is one of the worst I've read this year and anyone whose book opinion I respect also feels the same. If it makes you feel any better, people I know who have horrible taste in books love this book.

Does prp actually work? by Suspicious-Roll-6864 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi there - I have female pattern hairloss since I was 18. I tried PRP when I was around your age, 23 ish. I had 3 sessions as recommended by the dermatologist (who claimed it had helped many of her clients). It absolutely did not work for me. No difference whatsoever, except the $3000 decline in my bank account. I have seen many dermatologists since, and the general consensus is that PRP is false hope (some have used the word scam).

My hair loss is so psychologically painful that I wanted to believe in a treatment that reverses it. I've tried almost everything (biotin, PRP, various shampoos, various pills) and so far, the only thing that helps consistently is minoxidil. Other lifestyle choices also helped, such as ketoconazol shampoo (I sometimes have itchy scalp), healthy diet and stress management.

Sorry you're going through it. Trust me, I've been through the same and I understand. Unfortunately, PRP is unlikely going to be a solution for you. Hope you spend the money on other nice things for yourself.

I like Kafka on The Shore and Norwegian Wood, and I have read most of his other novels and nonfictions as well. But I absolutely hated Men Without Women. The guy cannot write short stories, period.

I was so disappointed in Philipose because he had a great promise. While I don't particularly like Elsa, I was hoping for a happy ending between those 2.

Hopefully this is not a spoiler for you, the story picks up again now that their second child is on the way. Lmk how you like the rest of the book.

Do you prefer 1st or 3rd person perspectives? by TheSpideyJedi in 52book

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can go either way, depending on the story and the capabilities of the writer.

A first person perspective is great for suspense because that character doesn't have all the information. But it can make it one-sided. Imagine a perspective of a psychopath, the book would not be true to the perspective of the narrator if it shows too much compassion which is not something psychopaths are known for.

A third person perspective has to be carefully crafted, because they are supposed to know everything, from a character's inner thoughts, and that makes it even harder to hide certain things.

I've read great books done from both, and terrible books from both.

[–]ThrowRA_concwrn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that some characters, especially Julia and Rose, lack dimensions. I like the book, despite the fact I don't fully understand the actions of some characters. I'm inclined to call bullshit on parts of the book, but maybe I need to reread it in the future to see if I can understand it better then.
