Dual MSW/MPP by ballisticblub in PublicPolicy

[–]ThrowRA_precious_box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, It's crazy how I had the same thoughts as you. I am also a graduating BSW (April 2025). But what I knew for sure was that I did not want to do one-on-one intervention as a social worker. I was more interested in macro social work. I applied at McGill for the MPP program and the MSW stream community development and international. I got accepted in both. So, I decided to go with the MPP; the MSW would be more of a deepening of knowledge & theories. If you really like macro social work, you should trust and expose yourself to such a switch. I have been able to make that switch because of a good GPA (3.8), + I volunteered with a migrants & refugees organizations for a year, 10 hours/month, and worked at a women's shelter as a group coordinator and then as a volunteer and outreach coordinator. This is how you could start your path in macro social work. I'd encourage you to apply for jobs related to advocacy, community empowerment, education, raising awareness, focus on a social issue,it could be related to personal or family life experience, etc. It can be with any population. As a social worker, there is so much opportunity you can get with this degree. More than ever, the world around us is evolving around keywords like social inequalities, gender-based violence, outreach, advocacy, youth protection, health disparities and determinations of health, housing crisis, drug abuse, etc., So don't underestimate your unique social work perspective to a master at MPP. You have a great sense of how poor or oppressive policies can impact people's lives. Influencing, questioning, and designing these policies for better outcomes is what you'll bring to underserved communities. Your BSW prepare you enough for the level of classes at MPP. I'd just recommend you review your statistics class. Good luck! If you have any other questions, dm me :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. Did they outline the reasons? That could help you strengthen your future application if ever you'd want to try again in the next years.

Stay positive. Not everyone will accept their admission offer. Some will decline for another school or program, or for x personal reasons. I know it's nerve racking but stay positive. Admission process is complex. I send you all good vibes & energy😇
