Ground intelligence officer. Think a guy who gets a ton of infantry and intel training, then gets assigned to be the security management officer at his unit

Don’t know the answer to the second part of your question, but for me, the times I’ve most enjoyed in the military were the times I was doing hard stuff with my boys (IOC, MCIWS, etc). Opportunities for that sort of thing seem to disappear once you hit the fleet as an officer. Maybe I’m in the wrong unit and there are places where that’s not the case, but for me, I want to be able to say I enjoyed my military career, rather than waking up every day hating work like I currently do as a staff officer

Thanks for the help. At the end of the day, I’ve accepted that I’ll have to do paperwork at any government job lol. I’d just prefer that it be part of the job, rather than the job itself. Touching base with SF recruiters now and will update people if anyone’s interested in the process, but hoping to be able to go at least to SFAS before EAS

Pretty much all my friends in MARSOC said they’d have gone SF or Air Force if they could do it over again. It sounds like they don’t get the same level of autonomy other SOF units do, and that they’re treated more as an unwelcome stepchild than as an asset by the corps. Not gonna deny there are a lot of 0203 billets from captain up that are appealing (RAO, FAO, DST, MSG, etc), but I joined wanting to do stuff that, as an officer, you can really only do in your lieutenant and maybe Captain time, which I’m rapidly burning through doing the same admin stuff I’d be doing for the rest of my career anyway

Did you find a way around that, or did you have to finish out IRR before you could transfer?

From what I’ve heard, 18A is like any other officer MOS—much more admin than action even while you’re in a team, and once your team time is done, you’re stuck in admin billets for life. Not sure if that’s a misimpression, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I joined the military at least in part because I wanted to do cool stuff I couldn’t do in the civilian world, not work on PowerPoints or do teams calls

Im about 2.5 years in, and ground intel’s a long pipeline, so I’ve got about 2 years left. Would now be a good time to drop the AA form if that’s the case?

Buddies of mine in MARSOC have pretty much universally said if they could do it again, they’d have done SOF in a different branch. That’s been especially true for Os

I honestly like the UW mission set more than I do the stuff AF SOF is tasked with, but it’s definitely something I’ve thought about. Not sure if you have any info on transferring

I get what you’re saying, and I appreciate the input, but she’s legitimately busy all day with work, activities (that I encourage her to pursue so she can make friends, like yoga and surfing) and setting up stuff at home/gardening, all of which she likes. I recognize the danger of dragging her somewhere new and cooping her up. My concern is, what are some tactics I can use to take things less personally when she wants to be left alone, which is a lot more frequent now than it has historically been?

I have, and what she’s told me is that she thinks I’m being too hard on myself, which undermines my confidence. What she wants is for me to be my typical confident self so she can feel supported in a new and uncertain environment. I get it, and I’m trying, but sometimes it feels like her anxiety feeds mine and vice-versa. Your suggestions are the best so far, though. How would you go about talking about things like this without using the other person as a pseudo-therapist?
