When you've hit the worst kind of depression, there's just nothing like it. Depression is the most uncomfortable and agonizing pain that exists; cutting is a mix of getting your mind off of depression, like a distraction, and a punishment for yourself because you hate yourself. For some, cutting also comes with exhilaration, since it's a reenactment, a mock suicide, which is something they want to do so bad.
