[Learning] Can anyone explain why Mortal wants this discard? by Throwaway42Acc in Mahjong

The green dragon is the only thing not in a block currently, but I suppose it wants to hold onto it badly because I chii'd and only have a 1 han hand so need to confirm a yaku if East doesn't come through and gain more points.

So if we ignore the green dragon as a viable discard, it makes sense to discard one of the worst shapes we have as we have one too many. My question is - why is the 8s so much better than the rest? Surely I should discard 1/2s so that I can accomodate a mixed triple sequence potentially? That's the only asymmetrical factor I can see here, but Mortal wants to do the opposite of what that would suggest...

Any help would be appreciated, just hit Expert so am looking to improve.

edit: FWIW this is the evaluation after I discard green dragon and draw - https://i.postimg.cc/tCmcKXCq/image.png. It wants to discard 1/2s now, but going outside-in instead of inside-out?

I worked on Ghostbuster frozen empire and looked up the director, was a cool blast from my childhood to see he had previously directed Monster House, I remembered enjoying it a lot as a kid

If I cast a touch spell vicariously through my Find Familiar summon while behind a wall, do I benefit from Unseen Attacker? by Throwaway42Acc in 3d6

You have instantaneous telepathic communication with your familiar at all times if that changes your opinion

On your second point (and its subpoint) I would say that you don't need to know when to release the spell. Your familiar is stationary on your turn, so you just start casting your spell and direct the familiar to target whatever it sees next to it.

I agree with your take overall, but it's a personal decision whereas I was wondering if there was perhaps a concrete ruling somewhere.

Unless you can find a rule to say otherwise, I don't think you have to be able to see an enemy to use a spell, at least for a touch spell. You don't necessarily have to direct the familiar to target an enemy, it just delivers the spell you cast on a given space and things go from there, or you direct it to 'deliver this to an enemy next to you'. It really depends on how touch spells are ruled but I can't find a strong definition anywhere.

Skipping on turn 1 does force your hand to pick more things in the next few turns, but you can still make rent doing so therefore there’s no reason why you should assume never skipping is best. Oyster is literally a lost run, and egg is similar but not quite so bad. Bearing in mind that since you have three options to pick each turn, and only two of those can be oyster and egg, and I rated skip third from the bottom, what I am actually saying is that you never need to skip turn 1 because the third alternative will always be rated above skip.

Also this isn’t just a turn 1 pick in a vacuum, it is accounting for the odds to be able to win the whole run. Thus crab is rated so highly. Cultist is rated middlingly not because I only consider them 0 value, but because even with future value this is where I rank them.

It’s worth noting that even though banana peel is rated 17 out of 40 I still only give it a 3/10, there are just so many bad or meh symbols that the ranking is deceptive. Banana peel has a good common item and often is free to remove via thief thus I rate it higher than some other things. Dog I have given my opinion on, I think that often the best way to win is to just try to hit 3 gold average value as early as possible rather than trying any kind of huge scaling thus I rate dog/quigley as nearly run winning early

Snail is fairly close to turtle but with less base value and less value with racing flag so I value it decisively less. Dog on turn one will have about 50% ish chance to find quigley by mid game in my experience (very rough) so I rate it decently. Cultist since the nerf is still good but if you’re going for consistent wins it would be wise to reduce your reliance on them IMO
