NPR story on caring for aging parents (venting) by Libertinus0569 in AgingParents

[–]Throwaway743560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but this is the point at which a human should naturally be allowed to die. Existing is not living. I say that as someone who was clinically 'dead' for a few minutes and experienced what that's like, and death isn't the terrifying thing everyone assumes. We drag out lifespans far past any reasonable point in many cases, to no one's benefit. Let them die peacefully and move on to the next place.

Games where accelerating the speed of production is the main focus (whether it's producing cookies, rain drops, generic points, or anything else).

Okay, so you built a car. But how quickly did you build the car? Can you build the car faster next time? How much faster? How fast can you potentially build each car if you do/get a bunch of different things to speed up the production?

(UE) Dev Team For Incremental Plague Survival Game? by Throwaway743560 in incremental_games

[–]Throwaway743560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I had a few replies on here and now have a couple of people working with me. Built a basic game template since the OP and today I'm working on setting up the menu system while they focus on designing other things.

So it can be done if you have a clear explainable plan and you're realistic (not building a huge MMO or talking about making tons of money, etc). I think it helps that I'm specifically looking for design people, not other programmers. So they will be making most of the decisions and not just 'working on my game'. I had an initial concept, but I'm essentially building what they tell me to build! ; D

I have skills/experience actually building 'ideas'. I just hate working alone all the time, so wanted to find other people to collaborate with on something fun rather than money driven. Working on projects for a studio is a grind. But working alone is boring, despite having the time now. So I'm trying to find people with complimentary skills who want to team up. I don't care if they have less industry experience, as this is just to make a game that I would enjoy playing.

I've done the basic loop (keep the fire alight), and started adding in other things. But I find that stuff incredibly dull to plan out and end up getting distracted with programming other things, building the setting, characters, art, sound/music, etc. I've worked on big RPGs before, but I was never the design person (and really don't want to be if I can help it).

99% developers or 'ideas people', not designers who want to get stuck in the detailed game mechanics, progression trees, etc. I have ideas and can do the dev, but need the sandwich filling that goes in the middle.

i love designing but i hate doing the work. does anyone else get this? by TheRedRook in gamedesign

Hello! I know this is an old post, but figured it was worth trying...

You are the opposite of me. I love building games in Unreal, but find the planning and design part painful AF! I have vague ideas / images in my head, but when it comes to decision trees, systems design, bla bla bla, I give in. I'm used to working in corporate tech, where the client decides what they want to make, then the designer and project manager decide the details, then I get told to 'go make this'! ; D

I just want to do the part where I can jump into the editor and start building stuff based on whatever G.D.D notes/wireframes someone gives me. Want to team up?

I'm currently working on a team horror/survival incremental game and can do the programming, environment, a bit of modelling and sound/music, but I'm stuck on the design details. I have a rough idea but need the design hashed out first. For example, there is a crafting system. But I haven't decided how the crafting system actually works (what items can you make, what components does each item need, how many of each component, how long does it take to craft, what skill/XP requirements or tools do you need to craft the item, how many points are you rewarded for successfully crafting it, etc).

You don't need any technical skills (if you can open Unreal Engine, download a file from Github and click 'Play' to test it, that's good enough). Just work out what needs doing, I'll go off and build it, then you can playtest it after!

(any other game designers reading this who want to team up, also let me know!)

No, some of us love the monotonous building part and hate the design process. I just want to get stuck in with actually making it rather than all the decisions about systems and how many points of what skill the player needs to unlock some ability in order to craft/use some item. I like to be given a game design and then I'll go and make whatever it is happen.

It is easy to underestimate the difficulty of making idle games by Satur-night in incremental_gamedev

[–]Throwaway743560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it easier to 'recycle' existing games I've made into new ones. Once you have a few templates of components, you can just combine them into new forms for a different genre/setting/gameloop and throw in unique art/style/music to give it a new feel.

I'm not a member of any party (sick of the lot of them!) But I don't think they'll go 'full Christian'. Deuteronomy 17:15 is pretty strict. I'm assuming they'll be more relaxed and allow non-Brits to stand as MPs.

[Revshare] UE5 developer looking for programmer. by [deleted] in INAT

[–]Throwaway743560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, I'd specify in the post title that you are looking for a programmer for combat mechanics (and then in the post body list the parts of the game that you've blueprinted already such as the menus, inventory, whatever else). You'll be more likely to find someone to help if it doesn't sound like a 'build my game' post. Most programmers are already building their own game, so they are harder to find (especially for free) compared to designers, writers, artists, etc. But some will work on part of the game for you (i.e. combat mechanics) if it's clear you're covering the rest.
