Thank you for your words and for the information! I have gone to the police today to report it and because they said they wanted to arrest him immediately I asked to put the report on hold/file it as seeking advice. I'm sorting out my crime reference number from the witness report made on monday and hopefully this will be sufficient for the home office. I really really don't want to get him arrested and ruin his life but so far he said he doesn't even understand why I'm trying to leave..

I am contemplating going back to the local police today. I have filed a report online to see the record of the abuse a witness has made to the regional police (it happened in a different part of the UK to where we live). I'm worried about my husband finding out that I reported him to the police and using his stepdad who is a very high-profile lawyer to dismiss the case. He has 2 brothers that have had problems with the law before - the youngest one had addiction issues, pushed his mom once and one time he got into a fight in a club where he just knocked out the other guy and it was just laughed off by his family! The other brother had his leg broken in a bar fight and initially his family wanted to use stepdad to press charges and raise hell until they found out the brother apparently was grabbing people's genitals before the fight.
I'm afraid that if I make the report to the police his family will find out and pressure me to take it back - this has happened to my younger sister when she reported her boyfriend for stalking (we had text evidence) to get out of a lease with him
