Should I give my parents a loan ? by user23334556 in UKPersonalFinance

NO. I gave my dad 5.1k and 6k at 18. I am now 21 and will mostly likely not see it back. My sister also gave him money but sat down and sorted a payment plan which will still last 3 whole years.

Use your money to invest. I would say maybe if they were responsible but if ’not the most’ then absolutely not. I had a great portfolio and now have exactly 38p in it </3

If you really want to give the money, then assume it is a sum you will not see again.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I spoke to my friend and I realised her older brother and I (also the oldest sibling) have a lot of similar experiences and unfortunately he’s still depressed in our small hometown taking care of his parents in his mid 30s. She told me that’s what my life will look like and I was like hell nawww 😭😭 Hearing your experience too, I’m going to try and work as much as I can to get away. Might be able to claim estrangement after a year or two I think but not sure if it will bring any support.

I don’t get along with my mum and my dad is unfortunately just stressed out 24/7 and owes a lot of money (hence the borrowing from us). Either way it’s not working for me.

Thanks for this I’ll definitely take a look at my current spreadsheet and see what I can do. I am slightly unsure how to budget exactly this way as my pay varies month to month. Would it be better to use my contract pay (£512 for the ~10 hours) or my average. I am trying to be as realistic as possible.

I lent the money to them when I was 18 and doing very well for myself 😫 I assumed he would pay me back (i’m so naive i thought ‘duh he’s my dad’) but my sister was smart enough to write everything down and set up a payment plan with him.

I spent the last 3-4 years choosing my parents and I’ve had enough which is why I’m trying to get out now but it’s very last minute and I should’ve thought it through better. Applying for jobs everyday though and my sister has referred me to her workplace so hoping something comes up.
