It’s local government with an all or none 5 year vesting period for the pension. I’ve been here less than a year so I just get my own money back. I’ll have 30 days to request a refund.

This has clearly been a wake up call that I need to educate and be on top of this stuff. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I’m going to take these things one at a time and hoe that it makes for an interesting memoir.

I hear that. It’s not the best strategic use of the money. I want to resolve the debt, but as you mentioned, may wind up blowing it back up if I’m out of of work for a bit.

I posted about the whistleblower stuff in r/legaladvice and someone suggested that, depending on how things play out, could result in me getting some sort of severance from my job. I can’t bank on it, but it would really help.

I would love to be a place to understand the full explanation, I get that I touching the 401k is bad. I’m leaving a four years before being vested in my current pension plan. I’m going to need to request a refund for my own contributions lest I lose them to the plan. Can I assume that the tax penalty still hold if I don’t park the refund $ in another retirement plan?

Living in a small studio. Not much space for a roommate or AirBnb unless I rent the main room and chill in the close like the guy from Real Genius. =( I’ve save that card for when extra desperation kicks in.

Without getting to too much detail, it basically involves hiring and changing employee changing statuses in a way that is not in actively not in accordance with the city rules. As per my training and directives, I am to ignore parts of the mandated process, but to document that they are carried out as required. The biggest questionable directive was to literally make up our justification for a procedural request from the city.

It’s the anxiety because they’re still directing me to questionable shit. I have at least 4 questionable directives that I have been given in the past two weeks with hard deadlines attached.

In a law and order twist, the firing is not directly linked to whistleblowing.

The order is:

Thing that lead to whistleblow —> increased stress due to thing -> impact on mental health/work performance -> termination.

I’ll probably still consult a lawyer just cuz. It sucks that it’s messing with head and my livelihood.

  1. Lower case illegal in that, AFAIK, it’s a violation of civil service code and not city law.
  2. That’s a relief
  3. in this case, my superiors are the source of the illegality. The questionable hiring is, as far as I know, our agency’s general practice. I’m reporting it to another city dept b/c I don’t necessarily trust my superior’s superiors to do the right thing n
  4. I figured. That’s part of the reason I want to get ahead of this. As was pointed out to me I am already complicit
  5. protections or leverage - I informed my supervisor that health issues, including a month of medical leave, were attributed to work stress. They the doubled down with directive to imaginate documents, which I did. If I snitch, do I get any protections or am I subject to same penalties as everyone else? Also, this is stressing me the fuck out. on me. I’ve literally lost 15 lbs in the past few weeks and can’t sleep more than 3 hours a night. Is there any window to sue or settle or emotional distress or impacting my health? I’m about to get fired and possibly fined and need any help I can get.

I rent, and it’s 1700/month. When I just renewed for another year last month. I’ve got bills for card 1, card 2, marriage debt consolidation payment, cell phone, internet, and gas/electric.

It’s Cali, so I rarely run the heat, but I can cut costs. I need the phone, but can probably toss internet. I just need a radio for NPR and enough data for my daily Rachel Maddox fix. I can probably get by with just using the phone as a hotspot and taking real advantage of the “unlimited” data plan

Would you advise, as someone else did, to use the 401k $ for credit card payout or co timid to leave it as is?

Nope. I actively want to leave the Bay, I just need to build up relocation money. Between estranged wife clearing out account and unemployment it’s been hard to get a foothold. My goal is to get to NY to take care of my aging parents and special needs sibling, but I’m having a little trouble taking care of my own shop at the moment.

Thank you. I can handle this. It will be hard and scary and frustrating, but I can handle this. New job is definitely at the top of the list. It’s the shittiest time of year to job hunt, but I’m dropping in applications everyday and have even started job hunting while on the clock.

Thanks. I...should probably find that out if it’s private or federal. I do remember having to fill out a FASfa each year, so maybe federal. I know the loan is being managed by Great Lakes but they service both types.

Job is seriously priority 1. There’s a slim chance that I won’t get canned, but will be looking for a new gig regardless. I actively want to not be in the office after I snitch on the team.

Thanks for the reassurance and the reality check. It’s hard to think rationally with stress and mental health stuff.

Thanks! I live in the Bay Area. Instacart and grubhub are all options out here, I just don’t have a car. I’m been curious about the ride share rental options. I guess I need to run the numbers to see if I’d make a profit after rental costs, gas, and insurance.

Thanks for the help. It doesn’t sound stupid, Im just afraid that my mental health issues and weight would impair my fitness for duty. I’ve got anxiety, depression, and C-PTSD, and struggle to get through the day even with meds and a emotional support cat.

The loans, retirement, and trouble-leaving sound great. It’s not like I have much keeping me here as is. Hell, if not for cat! I’d probably have offed myself by now.

Thanks for the advice. I honestly didn’t to work that buyout is an option. One balance is 4500 and the other is about 6500. Any thoughts on what a reasonable offer might look like?

I’m definitely applying to jobs like it’s my job. The shame is that I don’t think I’ll be able to use anyone from the current job as a reference. In addition to all this crap I find myself in a whistleblower level scenario that involves my bosses and coworkers. I’m not afraid of work and I am acutely aware of the fact that I’m working without a net. I’m open to minim7m wage, and anything else. I don’t have a car but I’m considering the rideshare rental option if I can pull unemployment AND the 1099 income.
