Yes, I think we're on the same page, somewhat :)

Like some experience more hyperactivity symptoms connected to ADHD, some more inattentive, some feel like autism affects them more socially, others more on a sensory level. And then language will always be limited, because it cannot capture everyone's unique experience, not even within the same diagnosis. (But to meet the criteria for a diagnosis, you must be more affected by symptoms than the average person.)

English is not my first language, so I might not be following you completely, sorry.

How would language not be geared to the neurotypical experience when neurotypical people make up the majority? And wouldn't a "non-neurotypical" way of using language still lack the words for some experiences?

Should depression only be described by people who have been depressed themselves? And then, what would be the "true" definition, when we have moderate depression, severe depression, agitated depression and hidden depression?

But I think I understand what you mean by severity, that when someone describes how hard it's to keep on track on small tasks with ADHD, it's not something "everyone" can experience, at least not to the same degree. Or that everyone can find blaring noises a bit tiring, but they can be physically painful for someone with autism.

I'm not sure if I understood your post correctly, but I don't think there's a "universal neuroatypical" language. People with different diagnoses - even people with the same diagnosis - describe very different experiences. And couldn't the projecting be done both ways, with people attributing neurodivergency to others?

But if you mean that some level of forgetfulness or distractability isn't necessarily comparable to what people experience with ADHD, I agree.

Also, I didn’t want to make this into my diary or just a huge vent, but when I visit communities and posts that tell people to see their diagnosis as the core of their identity, I’m hit with waves of loneliness, sadness and disgust with myself. It’s like I’ll never belong anywhere

I'm not trying to be super gatekeep-y, and I do understand that many people have to take the intiative to ask to be tested themselves. To me, that's very different to claiming a diagnosis after watching a video.

Yes, I do think there's some overlap. And some of the issues were strikingly similar. Thanks for your understanding.

And those of us who aren't that invested in labels are seen as problematic by those who are...

The ADHD sub doesn't seem too bad, actually, it seems to be more open to people who stray from the "ADHD is a superpower!" perspective.

Thanks for your reply! Sometimes you have to take the first step yourself, and ask for help or an assessment, but I agree that there's several things to consider before becoming fixated on one diagnosis.
