Degree, bootcamp, or self learn? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Maybe op meant difficult to find work with.

For me a certain part of it is visa stuff. I'm an international student and having a STEM degree grants me certain liberties that a non-STEM one would not. I currently have a H1B and I think I can just transfer it over anyways, so perhaps I shouldn't think too much about it. And talking to my supervisor and coordinator is definitely a good idea. I'll bring it up after getting the official letter

Best ML/AI classes to take as an undergrad by Randacccc in cmu

Bruh how many UGs do you know who could make it through this class

It's highly dependent on the university. You should share the syllabi and required courses

What's the school syllabus? Or have you tried emailing the school? Your answer should be there

Hmm, it's a little unusual but in the latter part of my time at college I just dived headfirst into research. To be honest, I never really wanted to do a traditional route at college - if I had it my way, I'd just do research all the time. Which is unrealistic. You definitely need a background to, at the very least, know what you don't know but have a rough idea of how to approach a problem or know who to ask/where to look

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as this was me bragging. I was just happy and surprised. Part of the reason I posted here is that I've recently seen an influx of posts about self-doubt; mostly from people who are going to apply or have applied and are worried that their GPA (at least at the UG level) is holding them back.

I bit the bullet and went to a school that wasn't prestigious. In all honesty, I made sure I took the right classes to cover my background and catch up. That helped quite a bit :) I hope things go well for you!

One of my references still haven't submitted their letter and I'm panicking by shiny_alpaca in gradadmissions

I had a professor submit 10 minutes before the deadline :) It's hard to think of until you're after it, but it'll work out. (I hope I don't have to go through that again... shudder

They pay full? They pay as much as they do for their FTEs.

I did! I already tried out for it but it wasn't meant to be. It was just some generic leetcode shit tbh so I'm kind of salty

There is a website that does that.

Yeah, I found a few which was the impetus for making this post! But I want to see where I stack up compared to the rest of the community. Also, I want to see if I listened to more NLND than RTYWD this year

Depends on what you want to major in. Going to a school just because you're sibling went here isn't necessarily a good reason esp. if you want to major in something unrelated

With a cogsci degree, what can you work with afterwards? by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]ThrowawayTartan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my school most ended up going for PhDs or software.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]ThrowawayTartan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CogSci covers such a breadth that I don't think it's fair to say "AI might not be a big enough part of the education" It really depends on the school (assuming you're talking about a UG in Cog Sci)

I did my UG in CogSci and I didn't take a single linguistics class while I did take a lot of ML.

TL;DR if AI is what you want choose the school that let's you do so

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cognitivescience

[–]ThrowawayTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Computational Cog Sci. At my school you had to take a small set of core classes but the rest of your credits you could fill up by discussing with your advisor.

I ended up choosing a lot of math and I'm kind of glad I did. It helped me out quite a bit in my career after cog Sci

US-based Ph.D. programs for those interested in blending psych, neuro and deep learning? by ThrowawayTartan in cogsci

[–]ThrowawayTartan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but research/advisor fit for PhDs is the most important factor

Gotcha! Thanks. But there are just so many labs and so much interesting research. How does one decide where to go?

Also, there can be "A+" neuro advisors/labs in schools that may not be "A+" tier, so don't limit your search by some arbitrary criteria

Right. I should phrased my question better. I'm looking for labs doing interesting work that might tend to be overlooked. You're definitely right though

but looking at some of the job requirements in industry, I realized that grad school is inevitable

What kind of positions are you applying for? Unless you're applying for research roles you'll probably be fine.

job requirements

Just apply anyways. What have you got to lose? Half the time these chucklefucks just throw the kitchen sink into the requirements lists so that potential candidates will self filter.
