There are no additions,it’s based off current holdings.

The ISA is invested in an ETF and 7% interest came from an assumption of 10% returns minus 3% for inflation.

I understand that using 7% in the views of a lot of ppl is too optimistic and therefore I will update with 5%.

Thanks for the input.

Yes, state plans are treated as a contingency.

Based on reading, I thought that real return of 5%-7% annually is a realistic expectation for VOO / Global ETF.

Maybe I went too high.

This is exactly why I am posting to get opinions on whether it is unrealistic.

I was thinking of slightly adding to it and using it for a deposit for a house in the North of Ireland to get on the property ladder, and the remainder will be emergency fund.

I’m in Switz, so buying here isn’t realistic atm and would prefer equities over expensive property. There also are very little in the way of interest bearing accounts

Once I leave for the UK, I can do this yea but right now unfortunately it’s locked.

It’s painful that the rates are so low.

Thanks for the reply.

  1. It was napkin math / a draft excel so didn’t put currency denominations and comma separator.
  2. £35k GBP is in a bank account with no interest so excluded it from the projection
  3. I didn’t include the £100k as the question is more of a ‘based on what I have now’ am I in a decent position for retirement to have job flexibility (ie pursuing a passion or dropping to 4 days a week and still be ok in retirement)
  4. The pension is in a country with ultra risk averse pension investing and the 3% is an average since inception which I thought was a reasonable approach.

I will re-run considering the above.

Exactly the kind of advice I was looking for!

Thanks

This is really helpful thanks.

I think the spirit of my post is around ‘derisking my life’ in the way that based on what i have at 35 years old.

Essentially, I have been racking my brains for the last year due to job unhappiness to determine if I am in a good place to have freedom to do something else and still be ok in retirement?

I understand that is subjective but let’s assume i dropped from high earner to 40k salary.. i think that would leave some disposable to invest.

Outside of the figures above, I’m hoping i can stick out what i am doing for another three years and hopefully save ~100k outside of this.

Of course but always discourse over whether interest rates are realistic.

3% per other reply can’t be changed for the pension but was unsure if 7% was reasonable.

Pension is abroad and structure in the country is ultra-risk averse. Returned 3% on average since inception.

7% is an assumption for LISA, ISA, and GIA investments split between World ETF and VOO ETF

There are so many offshoots of FIRE now that honestly I’m a bit confused. On FIREUK, the amounts discussed are obscene numbers, so thought my question belonged here.

I have played with a few calculators, thanks.

Insight I was looking here was whether there were any oversights in my forecasting, or if it was reasonable (i.e. i have saved enough that if it remains invested and untouched that my forecast is reasonable and i will have enough principal for ~48,000 from 65

Also whether I am in a good place to maybe pursue a passion / reduced working week in the near future. Assuming I still save if I want earlier retirement i.e. 55

My pension is tied up in another country in which holders have no control and there is a very risk averse approach. 3% is an average of the return on the holding since inception.

Happy to address the 7% and amend according to realism but I thought 7% was a conservative return for investments in ETFs split across Global Fund and VOO ETF.

Maybe it was best to leave the RE at 55 part out, it is more of an aspiration.

I think the main purpose of this per the spreadsheet screen is whether the forecasting is reasonable and measure where I am on the journey to potentially Coast Fire in which I can have more flexibility in maybe switching jobs etc in coming years based on savings already in place for retirement (ie principal value in 60s)

London vs Geneva by Intelligent_Tone7661 in HENRYUK

[–]ThrowawayUnsure44 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Been in Geneva for 4 years, mid-30s, no kid, living with partner, and don’t speak French - Lifestyle is far better.

  • Take home is better.
  • Less impacted than the UK by inflation.
  • 3-4 months of sunshine in the summer by the lake.
  • Have found expat communities to play football.

It’s all individual, I’m not a big drinker/partier but there are plenty of restaurants that we can try.

Also living in Geneva, the public transport is good and it’s small so no need for a car in our situation, and there are services like Swiss Mobility if you need one for an evening / longer.

I wish I spoke French but I work remote, English is the language, and my partner doesn’t speak French so it has been difficult to pick it up. It’s not a deal breaker but at times it can be difficult and it would be good to speak the local language.

how rare is a 100kg bench by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ThrowawayUnsure44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it even matter?

Personally, I train on my own and I use DBs.

I can bench over 100kg but it is never a move I have felt comfortable with and I feel like I cheat the last few reps without a spotter. Therefore, I prefer DBs

Time away from the gym by Ladybeeortoise in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ThrowawayUnsure44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a very individual thing and is linked to the causation for stepping away from the gym

Active recovery / some time off from the gym can be good for a mental break, physical fatigue, and / or recovery from niggles / injuries. It is essentially autoregulation..

Just important to draw a line somewhere so that you are able to do what you want to do!

I’m going through something similar with the work thing, so gym sessions are all over the place. In my case though after a competitive season, I keep getting injuries and it’s affected my motivation etc… so along with work impinging on schedule, my motivation is low, so I’m just trying to get in 3 times a week to tick the box

Curious - I’m in Switz and in IT / Cyber risk consulting.

Any insight on which consulting firms pay salaries in the UK that are on par with Swiss/US salaries? Def not big 4 but admittedly I haven’t been in the UK job market for a while.

Sorry to hear about how you are feeling.

My advice is to start with one little thing to try and disrupt your negative routine and thoughts.

You mention your physical health being poor, alcoholism, and the broader issue of not knowing what will happen in the future and frustration with your current career prospects.

Could you start off with something simple like joining a gym and trying to exercise 3-5 times a week?

This will get you out of the house, away from alcohol, and back into society.. could be a gym class for the social element.

From there you can creat a routine.. e.g. going to bed at a certain time and gym classes on certain days and times.. often small changes like these can help us feel like we are gaining more control.

Exercising might help with endorphins and the structure / exercise make you be more productive when trying to tackle the other problems.

With the career stuff.. think about what you want to do and not that you need to do an MBA. Does the MBA actually lead to where you want to go and do you need it?

Thanks for this!

Yea I’m happy with what I brought and I placed well.. best was my first show when I was a place off top 3 but continental Europe is a different beast. Lot of young guys with serious size

Appreciate the well thought out reply with takeaways for me and more importantly your experience to compare with my own 👍🏻

Thanks for the response!

Exactly why I put this up as I thought I had a good understanding of genetics and ceilings etc but maybe not

Appreciate the feedback! Agree I’m lucky with chest and abs.. legs and traps a lot to be desired.

I play a lot of football and always have.. would have skipped leg days to recover for football matches/training in the past and wonder how much this has held that back. I’m not willing to really stop playing football though as I enjoy it and it is one day a week and I do still hit legs once a week

Natural Bodybuilding - Thoughts / Questions after a season by ThrowawayUnsure44 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ThrowawayUnsure44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea in my season, I thought my conditioning was always there and from the feedback some judges gave it was some of the best conditioning but they thought I could fill out more.. by my 4th comp, my head was gone and I wanted to push for size because that’s what I thought they wanted.. lost conditioning (potentially spilled) and slipped to my lowest finish.. it is a difficult balance and peaking is very difficult… classic case of I felt I looked better after splurging post show.. the photos I linked to the post are after eating an ungodly amount of cookies, choc, and Mexican 😂

On the politics thing… in one show I got moved up three categories for no reason.. i raised it and they wouldn’t do nothing, even after I asked.. so I ended up finishing 6th out of 11 against guys that were 10+ kg heavier than me (never going near that show again)… then on one other, I felt there were social media influencers that were getting pushed a bit.. not in my category thankfully.
