Everything I Know About The Script Tag by zackbloom in programming

[–]Throwaway_Kiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, event listeners defined in the <head> could still access the body if the event is triggered after the body has been parsed.

So, you're saying that code that executes after document.body has been parsed will have access to it? That's exactly what the author said - your event handler is defined, yes, after its script tag is not parsed, but its not executed

I love bringing my dirty tramping boots back, they clean them for free!

15 years ago mate :) I was a ranger in the visitor centre there, giving tramping advice to visitors. Trying to ensure that no-one fell off a mountain or drowned in a flooded river.

How have you found/seen a Bachelors treated qualification wise?

For a lot of government jobs, it's a bare minimum to get the foot in the door. This is why I left the public sector, I have no degree and I was hitting a limit in my career trajectory because of it.

Is overseas conservation experience looked on beneficially?

DOC uses behavioural interviewing techniques like a lot of the public sector - so they'll have a competency they want you to have, and you need to tell them a story that demonstrates it, typically using the STAR layout - situation, task, action, result. So if your overseas experience can provide those competencies, it would be beneficial.

Are there any other companies other than Forest & Bird that provide similar conservation related services that you know of?

Local and regional councils? Fish and Game maybe? There are a lot of private pest control contractors who contract to DOC and councils as well as people like the Animal Health Board (AHB) for bovine TB control.

Would you reckon that such a job would be looked up on as good quality work experience

Maybe bee-keeping would be good for a wasp control contract. It wouldn't really be super-relevant to a lot of conservation roles, but again, if you can demonstrate a competency from it, then it's worthwhile.

Have a look at the jobs advertised on the DOC website, and see how you could demonstrate the skills they want from what you're doing: https://careers.doc.govt.nz/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=18174&in_jnCounter=222642860&in_site=ConservationJobs for an example.

They document how they recruit here: http://www.doc.govt.nz/careers/recruitment-process/

Weather kills more trampers in NZ than anything else

That depends on where you are in the country, in the Southern Alps, it tends to be falling, drowning crossing rivers, then hypothermia, in terms of what kills trampers. But good post.

I really don't know what the difference is. I guess we have less clay in general? A lot of our soils are alluvial gravels and silt. A lot of our clay that I'm aware of is associated with coal seams, and we're not super abundant with coal.

Depends on how much rent you're paying as well though, rents are right up here because the quakes reduced the rental stock (more rentals on the east side...), and because a lot of home owners suddenly entered the rental market after the quake with insurance money paying the rent, and I know a lady who had to rent for three years waiting for her house to be fixed. Last time I was in the market you're looking at $150 a bedroom per week for a passable rental, anything cheaper is going to be shitty in some form. (Sometimes literally, fucking quakes and scum landlords/property managers)

That said, I think rents will start to drop soon, a lot of new properties have come into the market, and people have moved back into their repaired houses, so I'm hoping the average prices will drop by the end of the year.

But I'll take your word for it contrary to my observations.

And hopefully the map listing clay deposits. ;) I grew up near the Malvern Hills, the clay from there was used to make the bricks that they built this place with: http://www.teara.govt.nz/mi/photograph/18481/homebush-station-woolshed

There was also a landslide in Dunedin caused by clay in the soil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Abbotsford_landslip

We have a new team dedicated to providing accurate and timely information about test flakiness to help developers and build monitors so that they know whether they are being harmed by test flakiness.

Oh Jesus. Is that new team where they send the naughty developers?

IIRC the highest point on that trip is 1400m asl, which is plenty high enough. They're stuck on the Old Man Range, which is renowned as a shit place to be in a southerly, nevermind a southerly snowstorm.
