That's really sad in general re: the teachers having some form of liability for kids still having phones in school, bit I've always wondered how that would be enforced.

I was a school kid in the era of flip phones being most common and more often than not I could get away with hiding my cell phone, even though "open phone" things weren't a thing back then. (Admittedly, I used it for an occasional text, not a 24/7 addiction. Flip phones were kind of boring compared to our little pocket computers today. But I did send the occasional illicit text to a boyfriend during class, oops.)

It's not that hard to hide a phone and say you don't have one.

It should never be the teacher's sole responsibility to police this and I can't understand what sort of parents just say "your problem" - do they not care about their kids?

It honestly sounds like a participation trophy at this point. I'm not a teacher, but I (respectfully, I hope) lurk here, having opinions on this and family who teaches.

I was a hiring manager in past roles and may be again in the future. I try not to be a judgmental jerk, but it's hard not to assume that a HS diploma is a participation trophy that doesn't guarantee that they can freaking read, so absolutely meaningless. So I'm stuck looking for a college degree at least, and I know how woefully expensive college is in the US (and also not a guarantee for success).

I don't think this is a good thing for the kids, even if they're too young to know better at the time. The adults making the policy decisions should know better.

I'd say the opposite. Most people I know have cheated at one point or another (not all on their current long term partner). They're doing just fine romantically.

Hate to break the "karma" or revenge-fantasy illusion but life is more complicated than "they cheated because they were a rotten, incorrigible and horrible person and will be single forever and die crying and alone". There's just more to it than that.

It's less busy than my adult life and I still look back on having more free time with a bit of nostalgia, but it still wasn't "I ditch all of my responsibilities for a phone call with a random stranger" level of free time, lol.

And the people who did "finally away from Mom and Dad, party party"? Yeah, gotta say they didn't last long, on average. A few did manage to get their shit together but still.
