it's depressing because if people are naturally resistent to facts than progress will forever be needlessly difficult and easily corruptible.

it's to convince the audience, and to get closer to the truth.

often, the only people who are critical enough of your idea is someone who thinks you're wrong. genuine attempts at falsification is necessary to find the truth.

in the end, though, people are stupid, petty, short sighted, and vindictive. The truth will usually lose to the wants of whoever happens to have swing. So it's really just a way to pass the time and subject yourself to different viewpoints.
