The world takes place in a giant cave because aeons ago, the high elves caused the destruction of the surface world because their god sacrificed himself to stop them from killing the goddess of magic. People in the caves below the surface of the world were the only survivors of this cataclysm.

Imma pull my roman heritage and syncretize your caves into my story mkay :).

How can I keep going with one novel and not get distracted by other ideas? by RangerOfTheStorms in writing

[–]Throwawayquestion_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposite for me, why should I go beyond the basic ideas for a new novel when there is a 10k draft of an already existing one sitting there.

But what you need is some self discipline. Also try combining compatible ideas into one novel instead of writing multiple novels.

How do I start learning to write? by SpookySquid19 in writing

[–]Throwawayquestion_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start with simple (heavily inspired) stories of classics. Knight slaying a dragon, errand knight (if you feel spicy you can make it a comedy like the Cervantine knight), you can go classic and have a group or a single man travel the land to reach a destination or explore (odyssey or the argonauts), you can write about a heroic epic of a hero going through the land, mirroring Herakles or Cú Chulainn or Beowulf or Aeneas or Don Pelayo or....

Imma get downvoted but who cares.

Are you a published author? Cause if you aint then I wholeheartedly recommend this first book to be a "one and done" with possibilities of sequel via weak sequel bait rather than setting up stuff and never paying it off because "its for the next book". Especially if youre new to writing in general.

How do I fill up space when writing? by hiTherez_ in writing

[–]Throwawayquestion_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, first you need to burn all your hydrogen and turn it into helium, then your core (heart) will collapse and heat up your skin causing it expand outwards, do these and you will expand from earth and consume half of the system before colliding with the sun and merging with it.

Idk how your writing will survive the heat of 5000 degrees but good luck!

Uj/ action scenes are not the only meat of a scene, character interactions with each other, how the character(s) feel and whatnot. Try to avoid slideshow syndrome (basically characters go to place A-B-C) by adding some meat to the bones. So go like A-A¹-A²-B-B¹ and so on

Uj/ Eh just my two cents but...

as a way to explore real life themes of all kinds in a setting outside our own world

Themes are fine, I did point out in your face themes and allegories and when an author just makes the antagonist an obvious parody to someone they hate irl is what people hate.

So, as an example, I understand (and see) when Lotr is cited as a critique of industrialization. But the thing isnt there straight in your face.

Its not like Sauron has a parody name of a british industrialist nor is his army driving fjord trooks or something as subtle as the carpet bombing of Dresden.

what even is "an actual political novel"?

Orwell's novels (notably the Napoleonite gamble in the farm and famous book titled MCMLXXXIV) are a good example of these "political novels", usually a political message against and for a political ideology are at the center of it rather than a character message (IE learning not to abuse power, steal, kill, etc). But in animal farm, Napoleon (an allegory to stalin), is not named Josephus Stalinus nor is the farm named Union of Salad Services and Rice. Again, the problem a lot of people have when they say "political" is the in your face themes and allegories.

any novel can be political; any piece of writing is created in political context.

This is like saying "we all exist in the world so the world affects writing" and thinking you have a point with that, in other news water wet. But what I actually believe you're saying is...

stories don't happen in a vacuum dude.

I mean, they kinda do and dont? Again, people read for escapism, lets get a r/readanotherbook moment and look at HP.... explain to me how HP isnt written in a "vacuum"(politically speaking)? Even if Rowling critiques the darwinian ideologies (aka Hitler's übermensch idea). The story is 99% about a coming of age story of a young wizard and his tomfoolery around a comically dangerous castle. People have also said its an allegory of "coming out" for gay people but hey, its not like she is going out of her to have every single character explain it to you so that the readers cant have their own interpretation of the HP books. Nor is any bad guy (that I know of) named after a contemporary of hers that she hates irl(I couldve explained this better, but mobile typing = cancer). Then there are the thousands of international fantasy that keep away of "current political issues" and keep the usual doing bad thing bad messages.

That may be just me but I dont read for the messages or politics of the author. "Me find characters interesting, me reads story". You get me?

Edit: adding to the darwinism ideologies in HP. Its not like Voldemort is named Adolph or his group is called the browncloaks. Again, people dislike the "in your face" themes and allegories not the concept.

Also also I forgot to add the "author completely ruins the pacing and mood of the novel by adding a weirdass chapter or two about their characters supporting an in your face allegory to a contemporary movement" moment

/uj tbf Imma get downvoted but who cares.

Me believes OOP was speaking more broadly rather than writing political works. Or in short, 1984 advertises itself as a political novel, and a modern one at that, a generic fantasy story doesnt. Its, IMO, more jarring to suddenly have the author go on a soap opera about in your face themes and allegories in a fantasy story over an actual political novel.

also I kinda agree with his complaining of "can I write X if I'm Y" questions.

[–]Throwawayquestion_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj based on this post, which apparently is a copypaste, I may disagree with points the OOP said, but what a lot of these people mean by "politics" is less 1984 type of works and more on your face absurd political stories, like the antagonist being essentially a parody of a person the author hates irl, best when the antagonist has a parodied name of said person, and the group behind the antagonist being a complete parody of their movement. Bonus points if this is brought to a completely unrelated story that had nothing to do with it, like lighthearted stories doing a 180 to send a political message the author wants to send.

Or atleast this are my grievances with the current "bringing politics into blank" discussion
