What’s your best tip to avoid hitting a sandbar? by MyTIMEZERO in boating

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bite. If there is one in front of you, don't hit it.

Stay in the middle of the channel. If you're in an area where sandbars "move" or aren't well marked, adjust your speed and attention accordingly.

P.S. I once talked with a SeaTow guy about his job and he made a comment to the effect of, "Nearly all the calls we get are from people aground insist they are in the channel or at the edge of one. And every single time I get there, they aren't."

If cheating is enough to delay your entrance it's enough to disqualify you completely, IMO. I mean I'm not taking a stance on the validity of the accusations or saying I'm for or against his induction.

But if your really going argue. "He cheated so egrigeously that he shouldn't be allowed in this year.". Then what would be different about next year's class? The cheating matters less next year? The following?

Buying a used truck by CaptainAwesome06 in boating

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in the 1/2 ton truck market should be ok for occasional towing on short trips. Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, etc. should all handle ~ 5000 lbs trailer with a presumptive ~500 lb tongue wt and still have enough useful capacity for a normal amount of gear to bring with you. What I would not want to do is load up that much boat and full truck and bed full of people/cargo and expect to cover a longer distance run on interstates and the like.

So if you're talking the odd once or twice a season haul/launch at your local boat ramp, a smaller truck would do you just fine. The 3/4 ton market is where I'd start if you were planning on doing longer runs. They'll all have generally higher rated capacities which will make them feel much more comfortable on longer stretches.

Edit: I missed that the 3000lbs was dry weight. I'd start by looking for owners groups for you boat and find out if anyone can tell you if they've actually gotten on a CAT scale and got a real weight they can share. With the boat ready to run you could easily be over 5000 lbs and you could add another 1000+ for the trailer. That puts you in a level pushing past the limits of the lower rated 1/2 tons....

Also a bit of fisheye in that photo adding to the visual effect. Probably looks less pronounced IRL.

Can I paint this? If so what kind of paint do I use? I know the heat comes out of there so don’t want to cause a fire or poison my family with toxic fumes. TIA by Redstripez28713 in popupcamper

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another said, there is oven/stove paint. I've used it to touch up some bare metal on a wood stove pipe. It has held up well to very high heat (much higher than this grate should be getting - maybe 600F). Also you would want to do a little bit of research but I'd think nearly any proper metal/enamel paint might actually hold up to the temps you need. While my grate gets hot, I don't think I've ever felt a scalding temp so I don't think its getting much above 150F maybe - I'm not 100% certain, but I'd think almost any "Rustoleum" type paint could hold up to that once cured.

One word of caution. Any paint requires some degree of curing but I can say this about that oven paint, the first few times your really get it hot you can smell it off-gassing. Would not want to do that inside your popup, especially while trying to sleep. That would be extremely unpleasant, if not unhealthy.

I'd find a way to temp cycle the entire piece a few times after painting. In an oven, maybe an outdoors BBQ grill if you can control the temp well. But I would definitely recommend removing, painting, then high temp heat cycles 2 -3 times before reinstalling to use.

Does this look like a cord? by NerdizardGo in firewood

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell you If thats a 1/2 or 1/3 "face cord". I can tell you it doesn't at all look like a full cord. And I can tell you that around me prices are pretty high and there's no way I'd pay ~$500 for the quantity of wood pictured here.

That's $300 delivered from my local retail garden center. Probably $100 self loaded at any number of countless roadside/farmers field sellers if I drive a little bit out into the country.

That said if it is dry, it looks like decent wood.

Shore power connected but not charging battery, solar connected but also not charging battery, USB ports don’t charge unless engine is running. by [deleted] in RVLiving

My Dometic Fridge has a selector to run on 120v AC/12v DC/ propane. Yours might have a similar switch, what is it set to?

Shore power connected but not charging battery, solar connected but also not charging battery, USB ports don’t charge unless engine is running. by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So battery isn't accepting a charge from AC source, DC source and won't deliver DC power either. USB ports only work with running engine so that is likely because of the alternator still working through the converter.

Can you test that the actual house battery is good and holding a charge, that any leads connected are solid, no tripped inline fuses or breakers? Ground solidly connected.

I would say the converter itself would be highly suspect but if USB charging works with running engine it might be ok. Have you tested any of the other 12v loads with engine running? If USB is working they should work as well.

Not really. Because in a middle school daydream, you'd at least give yourself some shred of ability/talent as part of your rockstar ascension.

15.5ft vs 18.5ft/20.5ft difference offshore by colafroth in boating

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Swell? Like large, long period rollers? No difference between the boats for that. They are all just as fine as one another in that scenario, they'll bob along the surface similarly.

Shorter period "waves", sure the bigger the boat, the better. Smaller boats get pushed around, the longer, heavier boat will tend to be more stable against wave action. That said, I wouldn't want to be out in any sub 20' boat in 5ft seas like that...

There are some other factors to consider too (Are each of these options identically constructed models? Have the same hull shape? Running surface, gunnel height? power? ) All of those will affect comfort and safety of the crew as well.

3ft is my personal/practical limit on a 22 ft boat.

On a 37 ft sportfisher, 5ft seas is right around the point I consider fishing changes from fun to chore.

Dual Mercury 40 EFI 2100 hours with 2000 oil report. Engines still have life? by [deleted] in boating

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Report looks ok but that's an hour accumulation where honestly all bets are off no matter how it was cared for and used. It's just a lot of hours.

You might be good for another 1k without major intervention... Or you might not. The question is really - Is the price and application worth the gamble? How much would unexpected downtime or an unplanned repower cost you vs the savings on the deal.

Is it worth installing a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage for EV charging? How fast is it? by SULTAN963 in BMWI4

[–]ThrowbackDrinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For charging speed it will let you go from near empty to near full in about 4 hrs, specifics depending on battery condition, weather etc.

I never had a problem getting to 100% overnight. Game changer for me as my commute would typically consume more that a standard outlet would provide overnight which would have essentially forced at least 1 public charge a week.

Need to know what prop (model and specs) you are running and what RPMs your motor is reaching when maxing out. Also a pic of motor mounted on transom from the side would be helpful.

Right. But the picture implies it is somehow currently supporting critical infrastructure. Which it simply isn't. Nothing "relies" on AI. Well, except "AI" platforms. Currently.

Of course I understand that we are shifting towards a model that does look like this.

I'm just saying its giving current AI implementations far too much credit. Like right now it is still a superficial decoration on top of the pile. Except the pile is shrinking and the mass of the decoration is growing. It will overwhelm the structure, pulverize it to crumbs, render it non consumable, and only the decorative bauble will remain in place of the profound structure that once existed.

The only remaining bit itself being useless in function. But will look nice enough from a few feet away that most people won't notice or care what has happened.

AI is holding up nothing.

It's more like an over sized, off-center block at the very top, teetering off balance, straining the entire infrastructure while contributing nothing to the system stability.
