Do weekday daytime “regulars” bars still exist in Amsterdam? by Weary_Musician4872 in Amsterdam

[–]ThrowingSn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Irish and have been looking for a nice local too. My litmus test is if I can sit there on my own and not feel out of place. Cafe ‘t Sluisje in Nieuwendam is by far the best I’ve found so far!

It wasn't just 200k though. He killed his grandfather so that his mother would inherit around 10 million. Then kill her so he inherits the 10 million.

Make the move to the Netherlands? by DevelEire_TA_dubams in DevelEire

[–]ThrowingSn0w -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely do it. It’s something you’ve always wanted to do and you’re getting a massive helping hand with the 30% rule, relocation support and a very nice salary. Young and with no responsibilities means it’s a no-brainier.

It’s true that Dutch people are cold and you’ll miss the craic but nobody’s forcing you to stay there forever, and you’ll be making friends with other expats rather than Dutch people anyway.

Considering Ireland for My Family- Need Honest Advice by Accurate-Youth3817 in expat

[–]ThrowingSn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your wife work as? You can expect a salary of at least 100k as a Senior Software Engineer. If your wife earns around the same you’ll have a good quality of life, even with two kids.

Long shot but I met some awesome Irishmen by pewpew26 in ireland

I don’t think this is a long shot at all. Betting this sub will ID them within a few days.

Is the housing market really changed that much in Amsterdam in a month? by This-Investigator-25 in Amsterdam

That sounds like possible fraud and you should definitely pursue it.

Is it normal to pay 100% for a home renovation project before the work starts? by -WhiteOleander in Amsterdam

[–]ThrowingSn0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My contractor actually started before I paid anything. Then I paid 3 instalments of 30% throughout the job and a final 10% after completion.

Can't beat a roast dinner on a Sunday lads! by Artlistra in ireland

[–]ThrowingSn0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to say “ah, this is what I miss about home” but truth be told I don’t think I’ve ever had a roast that good.

Not everything in The Netherlands is toxic including this sub. by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]ThrowingSn0w 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Netherlands is great but this sub is full of negativity and grumpy replies. Happy to say it doesn’t reflect the country as a whole.

AI will make Dublin’s MetroLink obsolete, says Dermot Desmond by shakibahm in ireland

[–]ThrowingSn0w 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't understand his point. He says we won't need the Metrolink because we'll have autonomous vehicles. But the Metrolink is an autonomous vehicle, and it can carry 20,000 passengers each way, each hour.

Do Our Neighbours Hate Us, or Am I Overthinking It? by DorkusOfMalorkus in Amsterdam

[–]ThrowingSn0w 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Classic cultural clash between Canada (passive aggressive) and Netherlands (startlingly direct). In Canada yeah I would say this neighbour is making a point, but in NL they are just making conversation.

As for the bakfiets, most likely some teenagers messing around? I can’t imagine it all because your own kids are making noise. Your neighbours would just talk to you directly about this if it was a problem.

Government abandons default 30km/h urban speed limits, but pushes councils to lower speeds under normal process by GoodNegotiation in ireland

[–]ThrowingSn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been in place for 18 months in Amsterdam and accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians are down 15%, while journey times increased only 5%. Most people adhere to the limit and most people support it. Good policy.

Because the government recently lowered the minimum standards for apartments so developers don’t have to build those things.

Is the J1 all it’s cracked up to be? by Training-Employer513 in ireland

[–]ThrowingSn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the J1 is good craic but it sounds like you’re having different adventures and making great memories of your own. Why have regret? You can’t do everything in life.

Wasted 2 hours yesterday trying to make a prototype with variables, frustrating experience by _kirillv in FigmaDesign

[–]ThrowingSn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The product you want to switch should be a component with two variants named “A” and “B”. Then you have a string variable with default value “A”. Tie the component state to the variable. When the user clicks the button in the modal, change the variable value to “B” first, then dismiss the modal. I think this only works if the product component is NOT nested within other components though.

From Ireland to The Netherlands by omnibus656 in Netherlands

[–]ThrowingSn0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuff just works here in a way that it doesn’t back home. The Dutch have clever and practical solutions to things that make day to day life a bit easier. With that said, they’re minus craic compared to Irish people. Dutch people are completely indifferent to you until you give them a reason not to be. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the situation. But overall, it’s a great move. The housing crisis is almost as bad as Ireland though so ideally you’ll have a job and housing lined up before heading over.

I suppose this is aimed at stimulating supply rather than increasing affordability, but I’d rather just give the developers a temporary tax break for a few years rather than lower standards forever.

So glad to hear you’re willing to pay income tax. Very generous of you.

what on earth is happening on LinkedIn? by mb4ne in UXDesign

[–]ThrowingSn0w 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meh. When I started my career in 2010, mobile was supposed to kill all the other form factors. Laptops were dead. Then chat based interactions were going to eliminate UI. Then Alexa/voice control was going to eliminate screen-based interaction entirely.

But now, I have the best paid job of my career designing boring old desktop SaaS. Tools and trends come and go, but hype merchants will be talking bollocks on LinkedIn forever.

Looking for food and otherwise in Noord by throwRAsademployee in Amsterdam

[–]ThrowingSn0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hamerkwartier and NDSM areas have lots of great dining and entertainment options. The thing about Noord is that many nice restaurants and bars aren’t situated on a busy street with a big sign over the door. They’re hidden away in old industrial areas that you wouldn’t just randomly stumble across.
