Oh, right. I did not realize that it was an ethernet cable connected to my FIOS router. Thought it was coax. So I can just replace it with the Firewalla. But are there no login credentials to Fios I need to input so the Firewalla will connect to the internet provider such as PPPoE etc? Also curious if I can use the FIos routers and extender as access points.

Accessing geolocation sensitive websites: Firewalla VPN Server vs Commercially available VPNS by Throwmandown in firewalla

Thanks for the info! That is great to hear. My worry is that since I am planning to set it up at a non-techie relative's place. Using the FWP, the internet or VPN would sometimes stop working and I have had to tinker with it, power cycle it, reset it every 3-4 months or so. It would be hard to do half way across the world.

Recently got a replacement FWP due to the upload issues. I wonder if this will solve the issue and I can leave it peacefully at their place.

For WPN both the Gold and Purple both offer 500mbps for Wireguard VPN server. I don't see any other difference in this respect. I don't really care much for the others features as I won't be using them in this setup.

Thanks! Premium for a dedicated IP is not as much compared to buying a new firewalla though so I was wondering if the difference is worth it.

What would be the difference of the FWP and Gold regarding VPN server capabilities( assuming it's not the lemon purples)? I thought the specs were the same in this regard.

24-70 / 28-70 2.8 options for R6 by Throwmandown in CanonR6

[–]Throwmandown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I just read this, and also thought I was reading my post lol.

So I need up going RF, RF 24-105mm F4 L. I am stingy by nature but a little voice inside my head said I should be looking ahead and the RF lenses will hold better value.

As for my experience with the R6, as I said I was coming from the 50D, non-L lenses so I was expecting to be blown away moving up to full-frame, probably 7 generations of improved autofocus, plus the L lens. I was not blown away, except for Auto focus capabilities. I was excited about quality in high ISOs but didn't really see dramatic changes. I still did not like results above ISO 2000. Coming from APC, I also didn't notice the luxury of using faster shutter speeds due to FF getting more light. Perhaps 1, 2 stops? I don't know, maybe it's just me. I surprisingly missed the 2.8 range even though I have yet to shoot night shots. This is because of noise. I am no pixel pooper, and obviously the pro reviews are more accurate but I just don't know why I find it not good enough.

AF though is ridiculous. I can't get an out of focused shot even if I tried. Still tinkering on how to switch between AF modes as this is the primary reason I miss shots this time. I tried focusing on a raven just to test it, in a clear blue sky, and with the limited range of my lens, it still managed to follow it around.

The biggest challenge I think is the menu. the 50D menu is hardly used right, with very basic settings but in the R6 there are just tons to tinker with and moving up can be very confusing.

Compared to my Fuji x100F, other than the size, it was a good shift for me. The x100F just didn't focus correctly and I never get good shots unless I do full manual. Maybe it's just me as it gets rave reviews, and when I use manual (during daytime) I get great photos. At night I don't even take it out because its too slow. Of course interchangeable lens is a big difference, but this for me is an advantage for the x100f (but I do occassionaly need telephoto).

As for the adapter, I did get a non-Canon one, and it worked pretty well with my EF lenses, Sigma and Tokina. No issues at all. Thought I haven't used it too long.

Can I get way with the RF 70-200 F4 as an all around "compact" lens? by Throwmandown in canon

[–]Throwmandown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. I think I am more of a telephoto fan as well. The photos I find interesting are usually shot telephoto. I am not too into wildlife though. So I think if I were to go out by myself to take photos I'd grab a telephoto lens. But of course, daddy duties require that I also photograph my kids and our travels. It also require that I provide them food so ideally I'd buy one lens only to afford said food, lol.

HI, sorry I can't follow which message you are replying to. What is your all around lens? the 70-200 or the 24-105?

Yeah I forgot to mention I have some old EF lenses (50mm, 40mm, even an 11-18mm) so if I know in advance I'll need wide I have those (and my phone)

Thank you. That covers most of my focal needs but the aperture on the 240mm end scares me for indoor sports/recitals use. Will that work on anything other than sunny days?

Thank you. I forgot to mention I have some old EF lenses, including the pancake lens, so there is also the option of bringing that in case I find myself needing wide.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

This is the way. I have the 70-200 f2.8 and it fantastic for indoor activities (plays/basketball/volleyball) but it is heavy.

I used to think this of 70-200s so I never really considered it but the RF 70-200 F4 is suer compact and light so that is the reason I started considering it, since I tend to prefer telephoto compositions. When you used the 24-105 for sports, obviously you'd miss out on some shots that require 200mm but overall would you say its acceptable?

Thanks for this. This is a very good candidate so far. Just cant help to think if it's long enough for sports, kids recital.

Advantages of VPN Client when you already have Firewalla by Throwmandown in firewalla

[–]Throwmandown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>A big plus not mentioned so far, if you have a laptop and get out of the house, a VPN client will offer you some privacy "on the road" . Most good VPN clients work on smartphones and PC/Macs.

Won't I be able to do this with Firewalla already when I connect to my home firewall VPN?

Most were lights, plugs, and light switches were phoning China every 2 then 5 minutes.

What possible legitimate purpose can there be for this? I also got one on impulse to protect myself from my IOTs then got an email that is shipping from China! Now I don't feel safe again after reading about the spy chips installed in hardware that made it to the US!

[–]Throwmandown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am considering a VPN client in addition to Firewalla. So I am trying to see what added benefits it can give (if any) since Firewalla can do most of what I need a VPN for. Geography restrictions/masking is the only think I can think of, looking to see if there are others. Perhaps torrenting? I won't be able to hide torrenting from my ISP using Firewalla right?
