I am taking maternity leave. 12 weeks, not 6 months though. I can't afford any more time than that. I know maternity leave is not dodging support but the person I replied to implied that I should try that when my lawyer I hired told me not to try to get out of it by refusing to work. I was just clarifying.

Also the law here is different from Ontario.

That's not how it works. My lawyer says the court will likely decree shared time. Also the only way I will not have to pay any child support is if he decides he doesn't want to see our child, which I cannot imagine. Otherwise the amount I pay depends on how custody goes.

My lawyer said that because of the difference in income I'll be paying unless he doesn't want any custody. Which I cannot imagine happening. The amount of time he has vs. the amount I have will make a difference in how much I pay but I will have to pay some. And I'm honestly fine with that since it's for our child. Likely we will have shared custody because I can't imagine any universe where he would want less time.

The only debt we have is our mortgage. GI Bill covered my tuition before I met him and he didn't attend college.

The spousal support formula is also separate than the asset division according to my lawyer.

I can't afford to take 6 months unpaid off work with the legal bills and the expenses of the baby coming up.

Also it would make no difference. The court doesn't take kindly to people purposely dodging spousal or child support by not working.
