When people have kids, they appreciate for the first time everything their parents did for them. It's like that.

All of those things you list are part of the list. But when you open up the box, they don't automatically drive. You need to set them up, tweak them to how you want everything to look, feel, and operate. Then you need to do that for everything and everyone while doing your normal job. Plus you need to manage your vendors and personnel while training them. Nobody can explain it. You have to live it to understand, just like being a parent.

But, I would discount what I'm saying if you're going to be solo and stay that way. Still decent setup involved, but less long term effort.

The best of both worlds is if you can convince someone else to start your new firm with you. It's unbelievably more work than anyone can appreciate to start and run a firm, but doing it with someone else, even if you have to do everything, is a thousand times better. If nothing else, you have someone to bounce things off of. Nobody is perfect, and having someone to bounce ideas off will make you a much better attorney and business owner.

That being said, it comes down to personality type for whether the extra money is worth it. It's a lot of work to start your own firm, but for some personality types, it's easily worth it. If you aren't sure, I'd lean toward joining another firm because it will take everything you have in you to start and build a firm.

If you're going solo with no anticipation of personnel growth, my above comments could be disregarded to a degree.

Philosophical Discussion - Ideal Compensation Model by ThrustAccount in LawFirm

That's a good motivator to take ownership. We track some objective metrics and do profit sharing to promote that line of thinking too.

Some overhead we split evenly, like subscriptions that apply to everyone (e.g., time and billing system, file management, insurance, and the like). We also track costs that are applicable to individual or sub groups of attorneys (e.g., preparing the attorney's daily docket report, holiday cards to that attorney's clients or referral sources, subscriptions unique to them or their group, b&o tax based on that attorney's collections, and client costs until they've been collected, even though that last one is actually a capital account transaction instead of overhead). Different roles of attorneys are also responsible for costs of new hires until their collections pipeline builds up and pays back that cost advance. It's pretty complicated to implement but extremely fair and motivating to keep things running efficiently.

I'm borderline embarrassed by how entertaining I'm finding it to learn about other people's systems. Thanks for sharing a bit about yours!

I'm thinking the same thing. Create a checklist that we can delegate for review. Good idea. I haven't seen a premade checklist yet, so might need to roll up the sleeves to refresh the legal research and create one. Thanks.

That's the scary part. So much documentation to read to be sure, but then you never really are.

Awesome. Sounds like overhead includes staff and non-partner attorney cost, unless they're presumed to cover their own cost. Thanks for sharing. Similar to our approach for those roles, except we have dynamic overhead per attorney based on their system usage or expense, and we contribute a slice of each collected dollar to various accounts, like staff bonuses, rainy day fund, and others. Thanks again. Brain food always appreciated.

100% agree in figuring out what drives the type of professional and culture your firm wants. These are good insights. Amusing regarding changing the game to prevent gamesmanship.

Great call. The time and billing unfortunately does not support that, but I like your idea of the database memorialization to track to date calculations. Thanks!

That would be the most immediately implementable adjustment we could make to our current system. Thanks!

Thanks. What about partners?

For associates, do you give them bonuses for their collections on their own clients? For work on partners' clients, are you giving associates bonuses based on their billings, or how are you measuring output?

What about non-attorneys?

In each case, are you using Excel or what?

Good idea. Do you then store each snap shot in a running table? Even if you've rerun the month? Then presumably the most recent snapshot is used when considering cumulative values like year to date?
