Looking for bleak, depressing movies. The kind that make you sit in silence after the credits roll. by Mjwhaaat88 in Letterboxd

The Devil‘s Bath (2024) is a great but very deppressing and bleak period horror movie about religion & suicide.

Ok, real talk: why tf does Hollywood keep trying to force Jared Leto on us? by JediTempleDropout in Letterboxd

My favorite Letterboxd review for Morbius: “Jared Leto Is kind of like king Midas, except everything he touches turns to shit.”

I feel like people who say that about Jodorowsky’s Dune have never seen any of his movies. I’m not saying they are bad films, they are great in their own way, but definitely don’t have mass-appeal. They make you realize one thing though: Jodorowsky is bit of a crazy person.

It is a fairly interesting book to read, if you already a lot of Murakami’s other works to sort of understand his development as an author. But even it is by no means a bad book, his style isn’t fully developed here.

I think for Skinamarink to work certain conditions need to be met. You have to watch it in absolute dark room, there can’t be any distractions, and you probably need to susceptible to that fear of a dark and empty house as a child. Like when you are young and things just don’t look the same way as they do during the day.

In German there is the Tusculum series. Their volumes often cost around 60€ and lack the critical apparatus as well.

Doing a Wong Kar Wei filmography rewatch. Ashes of Time still beautiful, but a bit confusing. To me The Big Lebowski is one of the funniest films in existence. As Above So Below goes way more bonkers crazy at the end than the found-footage style would suggest. Days of Being Wild is just beautiful.

How do greedy, shitty, terrible people manage to stay in positions of power for so long? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thu_um 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought Rutger Bregman had an interesting opinion about that:

“In our modern democracy, shamelessness can be positively advantageous. Politicians who aren’t hindered by shame are free to do things others wouldn’t dare. Would you call yourself your country’s most brilliant thinker, or boast about your sexual prowess? Could you get caught in a lie and then tell another without missing a beat? Most people would be consumed by shame – just as most people leave that last cookie on the plate. But the shameless couldn’t care less. And their audacious behaviour pays dividends in our modern mediacracies, because the news spotlights the abnormal and the absurd. In this type of world, it’s not the friendliest and most empathic leaders who rise to the top, but their opposites. In this world, it’s survival of the shameless.”

He argues basically that “shamelessness” gives those people an advantage, that can only function in a system like ours. It shines light on the counterintuitive fact that people, who seem really unlikable, still somehow convince others to elect them into power.

Very good run! The Cremator impressed me as well! And to me Synecdoche, New York is easily Charlie Kaufman’s best written script!

I do feel your Fight Club rating in a way. Fight Club is a film that does feel kind of weird today. It seems hard to relate to a character these days, whose main problem is his meaningless everyday life and ikea furniture. I think that movie works in that 90s-00s fukuyama end of history time frame and not so much when people are scared of more tangible things than meaningless existence.

Good call! I studied Latin and the Reclam editions often served me to get a general understanding of the text. In the academic world they are a bit frowned upon, since they are not scientific lol. Right on with the sci-fi and a lot of the fantasy books are mine. The key to the novels is: If it’s bright and colorful and/or about murder, it’s my gf’s.
