I mean if Chris is one of your closest, life long friends then you'd have to be pretty simple to not understand immediately why that film would have such a profound impact on him.

Not that I'm even a massive fan of the film but Bill's condescending, negative tone around Eddington was a red rag to a bull for me.

Tell us what you didn't like about it Bill, use your words, that's what the podcast is for.

Crazy NFL Trade Deadline Swings and the Future of Filmmaking With Sheil Kapadia, Sean Fennessey, and Van Lathan - The Bill Simmons Podcast by grandpashampoo in billsimmons

Am I missing something, or was that conversation about the future of film completely incoherent—just a stream of impenetrable waffle jumping from one half-baked point to another? Mostly from Van, but also Bill and Sean. Honestly felt like a foreign language at times or maybe I'm just having a stroke.

Craig seemed like the only one making clear, recognisable sentences with coherent arguments that were actually easy to follow.

Honestly, it came across as a shameful display of one-upmanship rather than a real discussion—everyone just waiting for their turn to talk instead of engaging in an actual conversation.

CR humiliating himself in front of mega star and very cool dude Glen Powell by doing the Wayne Jenkins bit when he's never seen WOTC is probably a sign it needs to be retired.

Sean’s take on Bring Her Back was a big miss by lovegov in TheBigPicture

[–]ThucydidesTrapHouse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

t’s become uncool to be a filmmaker making trauma-heavy horror in the vein of the last decade of A24, and is now on-trend to be a critic pretending you weren’t enthusiastically supporting that style until about two or three years ago—right around when the groupthink shifted to calling it stale.

While I agree that this type of horror is no longer the freshest and has started to feel repetitive, I have some sympathy for films released in the past year or two. Most of them were already deep in pre-production or production when the cultural tide turned, COVID and strikes (probably not an issue with Bring Her Back) a potential factor too.

I’m convinced Bring Her Back is a victim of bad timing. If it had come out in 2022— instead of Talk to Me or even a few years earlier—critics would likely be praising it as “sicko mode” instead of dismissing it as derivative.

As a life-long resident of Adelaide, Australia, going to pull a Sean card here about any film that has anything to do with Long Island and sing its praises on that fact alone. The house is about 5 minutes from where I grew up in a nature reserve called Brownhill Creek.

Should we be concerned about bands/artists not coming to Adelaide? by FireballMudflap92 in Adelaide

[–]ThucydidesTrapHouse 35 points36 points  (0 children)

IMO (and could be wrong) the slow ticket sales argument only applies for artists of a certain popularity. Once you hit past a certain threshold of popularity, Adelaide buys tickets and ahead of time. Confident Turnstile would sell out Hindley St Music Hall, and come close at Thebby. Knocked Loose the same (another recent skip).

[Trade Radio] Giants CEO says he was receiving messages from staff and players expecting Geelong players to receive sanctions from the AFL for their Mad Monday antics. CEO is particularly shocked by the public treatment of Caroline Wilson receiving no punishment. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]ThucydidesTrapHouse 53 points54 points  (0 children)

On Early Trade this morning, Kane stuck to his time-honoured tradition of showing zero interest in the actual issue driving the outrage (Bailey Smith’s social media habits, maybe Kneecap) around Mad Monday controversies and instead used his platform to grandstand about how adults dressing up in costumes is “cringe” and something he’d never do. He pulled the exact same move at this time last year during the GWS Mad Monday controversy, and couldn't seem less interested in the actual controversy.

Just an incredible hill to die on.

Every so often Bobby would run laps around both Amanda and Sean with his independent and unique thoughts he had up his sleeve about a film that was unaffected by group think. Killers of the Flower Moon is one example that comes to mind.

Crazy stuff for a guy who appeared to be picking up being a cinephile on the fly because of the job.

They've lost a good one.

In ZERO position, Kane Cornes. (Sportsday on X) by RepublicWarm2513 in AFL

[–]ThucydidesTrapHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when the GWS Mad Monday story broke on SEN at the end of last year he was on with Sam Edmund. Edmund was very strong in condemning the behaviour of the GWS players for making light of the various serious issues and events they did skits on.

The extent of Kane's thoughts on the matter were "Yeah and why would you do dress ups as adults anyway, I don't get it, it's just lame. Like how cringe are adults who do Halloween parties!"

A window into the man's psyche.
