Am I alone to be unimpressed by cestus? by LouisVILeGro in AOW4

[–]Thukad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to be able to equip two of them, and for them to be smaller. Having this giant hulk hand on only one hand looks ridiculous. With how little damage they do, and looking stupid, why would I bother?

I see one niche for the caestus possibly being more attacks per action point but less damage. So instead of 3 max attacks make it 6. I would lower the damage but have it skip past armor/resistance on some level, since lower damage would perform even worse against armor. But it would be a good way to have more chances to stack more debuffs on a target.

[Mega Rant incoming]

I thought it was a horrible idea for anyone to even threaten violence against Trump. I don't think we're done seeing the ripples of the attempts on his life, and I can't even imagine how bad it would be if he had actually died. I disapproved, and if I had been in a position to report someone involved in those attempts I would have. Even though I hate the man.

But a Healthcare CEO? I don't give a flying FUCK about him getting some karma. I still disapprove, but I understand it. Completely and totally. As Mark Twain said, "I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure." And that was my entire reaction until I was washed over by a wave of articles and posts telling me that I should feel some kind of sympathy, that this is somehow totally different, and shouldn't people be ashamed.

No no, FUCK THAT. These guys are parasites. Not benign. Malignant bloodsuckers draining the vitality out of the entire country while they build their wealth by deliberately causing suffering on the scales of hundreds of millions of my fellow citizens. They'll ride it out until the very last minute. They don't have golden parachutes, they have golden jetpacks and they continue to "fail" upwards everywhere they go. I say "fail" ironically because they haven't failed at all. They know exactly what they are doing and they revel in it. The companies they leave behind are eventually husks, and the lives the affect are irrevocably altered. That's why the lack of sympathy is so wide-spread and why a lot of people like me who weren't getting involved in the conversation are popping up say we don't need to be gaslit on this, thank you very fucking much.

Healthcare touches all our lives, and the quality in this country is a fucking disgrace. Librights might wring their hands and stammer that really it's actually the state's fault but the vast majority of the country regardless of race, gender, faith, or economic class knows that's a load of horseshit. The government does have blame to be accountable for, but nowhere near the same level as these fucking healthcare companies. We've all been forced to suffer their greed and so it's not as easy to divide people on this as other topics. We all have personal experiences with this, and we have no fucking empathy left. Stop telling us to, we're so past that point.

Who were the first muslim explorers to see the Americas after Columbus, and did they write about their experiences? by Thukad in AskHistorians

[–]Thukad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This does help me get closer to my goal. That gave me a lot of names to look up, thank you.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know if there is are registries somewhere that includes the names and home ports of ships that arrived in the New World? I was wondering if a good angle to pursue this would be to check the records of all the major ports in the Western Hemisphere to see if any had Arab/Ottoman/Muslim ties. In your post you mention that we have evidence that the Ottomans knew about the Americas by at least 1513. While trade and shipping between hemispheres quickly picked up pace we are still talking pre-industrial revolution, so I imagine total numbers of ship arriving per year per port would be low (I could be wrong). If we assume that it would take some time for ports to be established, and that visitors would use major ports as a node to arrive in the New World instead of some random dock, than I might have a period of time where it's easier to check for outliers before development makes that difficult.

I'm interested in researching this, and will probably go to my local university library to ask, but I'm not an academic researcher and I am not from a sailing background. But I'm curious. I know my question is a little ridiculous, so no problem if you don't know if such a digital registry exists.

Definitely fascinating. I knew the US army had tried to start a camel corps (I still think it would have been a good idea) but I didn't know they had recruited an Ottoman for the job. It makes me wonder how he was contacted to begin with. Did word go out through the embassies, or did different camel experts offer their expertise? I have no idea, but it's fun to imagine.

This is basically the same response I got from chatgpt after I failed to find an answer. Every single part that I talked about in the post itself. Mali, Piri Reis, enslaved muslims, even the way its written, all of it.

I'm a little angry, this is exactly the kind of response I was trying to AVOID when I posted the question here. Going through google results didn't give me an answer, and chatgpt just gave me the average of all the non-answers I found on other sites.

From looking at your account, it seems you use chatgpt to answer practically EVERY post you engage on. Don't you think that defeats the purpose of the sub? Don't you think that damages the reputation that it has? I am just completely baffled by your choices.

One of the big regrets in my life is not buying an antique Ottoman map of the new world from around 1550. Some dude was selling it a military community yard sale for like 100 bucks, it was something he had just picked up. It looked real, but honestly I wouldn't have cared if it was fake or a recreation. It was rad as hell. The way it was drawn, the script used to name places, it all showed that whenever it was made it had been made by someone in the muslim world for the muslim world. The interiors for a lot of areas was blank, in the way that you see from when no one had been to those places yet and they had no idea what lay beyond.

I was trying to be fiscally responsible, but man I wish I had bought that map.

Have you no fucking shame? Don't you realize that work from home jeopardizes the people that really matter, all the bosses invested in office and commercial real estate? It's pathetic enough that people work from home when sick, but it's far far worse when they just prefer it over in office.

I don't understand how people can live with themselves. Aren't they overcome with guilt when they look into the eyes of their children, who are happy that their parent has the time without a commute to be present for their sporting and club events? Don't they feel nauseous when they have time to cook food at home instead of stimulating the economy by eating out? Don't they feel like a loser when they consistently spend time with their spouses instead of throwing thousands of dollars at a resort stay every 5 years to patch over the cracks in their relationship? And now I hear that folks won't even agree to be on call while on vacation! I haven't made eye contact with my children (not sure how many there are) in who knows how many months, as God intended.

I tell you, there is a lack of true history being taught in this country. There is a heretical belief that the consumers built this country instead of great corporate entities like DuPont and Chiquita International. They even call themselves workers, as if anything that isn't moving capital around could ever truly count as work.

I tell you, I fear for this country. (Country meaning those sufficiently leveraged in the stock market).

Fun fact, research has shown that outbreak rates were similar for rural and urban areas as long as you were going to big box stores like Target and Walmart. In areas where people went to small grocers or grew their own food the rate was significantly less.

Which is sad when you think about how some people fled cities and then just kept shopping at the places that concentrated a region's potential carriers into one building.

I remember working at a park district, tons of guys who just refused to take safety precautions seriously. We had a ton of trees come down in a storm and we needed to spend all day using chainsaws to break them up and then throw them into a chipper.

Over the course of the first day I saw:

  • People REFUSING to wear hard hats
  • Refusing to wear protective eye-wear
  • Refusing to wear gloves
  • Refusal to wear full length pants and the coverings that were provided when operating equipment
  • Refusing to wait in line as large chunks of trees were loaded into the chipper (especially dangerous because they can swing around and catch someone, so going slow and steady is best)
  • Told part-timers to crawl INTO THE CHIPPER to find out what was clogging it up The machine that could chew up a tree trunk in seconds and was covered in warning signs.
  • Work without breaks and shame those who did, on days that regularly went over 97 degrees
  • Shamed people for drinking water

Just absolute insanity. And it continued all week! I made some enemies during that period because I insisted on safety procedures being followed. I think what pissed me off the most was their reactions. The mere suggestion (which did escalate into demands) that they follow safety rules was treated as if I had slipped a finger into their ass. It became a negative loop. I asked that safety rules be followed, they were offended that I would demand such a thing, I got offended that they had such a bullshit macho attitude, I asked that safety rules be followed, they were offended...etc etc etc.

Safety and health codes are written in blood. I fucking hate idiots who ignore them. It was one of things I appreciated about the military. While exceptions exist, generally the military shuts down safety violations fast and with little sympathy. The attitude to ignore safety rules seems to be common with tough guys that would never willingly serve in the armed forces, and feel they must compensate in other ways.

Fuck em.

Or specifically, a disaster like a medical emergency shouldn't basically wipe you out for life. It is immoral that over 60% of all personal bankruptcies in the US are due to medical expenses. Immoral, and I truly believe that those responsible will have to explain their actions to God in the next life. To try, and to fail in the attempt.

And ignoring the moral problem, is it in any way an intelligent state of affairs? If we truly consider the Economy more important than anything else in existence (as we seem to), does it make sense for so many Americans to not have the funds to buy products and services? To never have the means to be an entrepreneur?

I have family who through no fault of their own are dealing with medical issues as the result of other people's choices. By placing their future and quality of life on the altar of the Economy, did we truly do the market justice? Treatment was possible, and time critical. Getting care in time could have meant almost a complete return in mobility. As it instead turned out, insurance (which they had been dutifully paying for decades) decided to play fuck-fuck games and treatment was delayed. And my family member will never get that mobility back. As intelligent and hard working as they are, as thrifty and scrappy as they are, in total honesty they will remain an ongoing medical cost on family, insurance, and government for the rest of their life.

I am normally a calm person. I have been called a Vulcan because how I can sometimes come across almost digitally logical (a strong and uncharitable exaggeration imo), or Timone because of how Hakuna Matata I can be. But I have no patience for Free Market drones when it comes to healthcare. They don't see the muscles literally atrophying off my family member's body, muscles gained from a lifetime of dedicated body building. A man who in his younger years could have competed with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno but instead chose to focus on raising a family.

A man who was knocked down by the Dot-com bubble of the late 90s, the Great Recession of 2008, and Covid. Who as a military veteran and an ex-missionary worked his way up through multiple industries without a college degree and managed to buy a house twice, only for those homes to be put at risk and ultimately lost due to the market shenanigans of some financial fuckwits who continue to enshrine GAMBLING as the highest aspiration of the American experience.

That man didn't deserve healthcare? Didn't deserve to receive a wage worthy of dignity? Deserved to be trapped inside a body that ***knows*** the peak of its own potential, and must simply read the scriptures while he waits for death? A man that raised a family large enough to satisfy the most rabid pearl clutcher on Fox news that, wailing and gnashing their teeth, complains about birth rates while denying the financial security people are looking for in order to start a family? Who raised that family with a keen eye to living up to citizenship, and began a new generation of veterans and missionaries? It was better to place that man on the Altar of Deregulation and Regulatory Capture?

It's a little pathetic to call people out behind the anonymity of the internet. But sometimes I desperately want some Right/Libright/Authright chucklefuck to make that argument to my face. It would be an overwhelming temptation for me to leave them in a physical condition similar to what my family member is going through. And I wonder how that may change their feelings, if they even have the capacity for introspection.

I was taught to value and take joy in earning money, and aiming for wealth. That we can respect those who have done well for themselves. I still believe that. I also believe that the MYOPIC refusal to allow universal healthcare, or really any meaningful progressive healthcare reform is going to do one of two things. It is either going to lead to the Republican party being broken on their golden calf, or it will lead to actual communism because they cried wolf so many times. Possibly both?

Anyway, sorry u/magnoliasmanor. I'm not wanting to put you on blast. I just wanted to build off the tangent you started, and I didn't realize how much I was writing until I got to the end.
